GENERAL EDITORIAL
The Alamkāra-Cintāmaņi (AC) has caught the attention of Sanskrit scholars since the time it was edited by Padmarāja Pandita in the Kavyāmbudhi, 1893–94. Later, it was published by Sakharāma Nemichanda Doshi, Sholapur, and printed in the Jainendra Press, Kolhapur, 1907. But, about the name of its author and his age, there was a lot of confusion which is now sufficiently cleared. By some the name of the author was wrongly taken as Jinasena, perhaps intending him to be identical with the author of the Ādipurāņa etc. Some took Jinasena and Ajitasena to be identical. Those who accepted Ajitasena as the author identified him with Ajitasena. the teacher of Chāmupdarāya, to be assigned to the tenth century A.D. Dr. K. Krishnamoorthy has given details about all these earlier views; and he has shown how Ajitasena is the author ( a fact mentioned in the text itself, II. 181-82 and the following prose lines ) who could not be assigned to a period much earlier than 1421 A. D. He has contributed two papers on this subject : i) The date of Ajitasena's AC., Karnataka University Journal, Humanities No., Vol. IV, Dharwar 1960; and ii ) Ajitasena's AC in the Upāyana ( Kannada ), Mysore 1967. Both these papers cover a good deal of common ground, and give plenty of references which can be profitably consulted.
Two works of Ajitasena have come to light, and their Mss., so far known, are recorded in the Jinaratnakośa by Prof. H.D. Velankar. i ) Śrågāra-Mañjarī (SM): It is a small text in Sanskrit. It has three chapters and contains 128 verses. It deals with "1) Padadoşa (viz. alakṣaṇa, śruti-katu, vyāghātārtha, anarthaka, aprasiddha, neyārtha, grāmya and asammata) which ends with a discussion of the Vșttis; 2) the ten Guņas of Vāmana; and 3) Arthālamkāras ( viz. upamā, rūpaka, jāti, bhrāntimat, hetu, samsaya, prativastū. pamā, āksepa, dịştānta and tulyayogitā)." See S.K. De : History of Sanskrit Poetics, pp. 264-65, Calcutta 1960. From the colophon of the work the following details are available. The author is Ajitasena (-ācārya, -deva-yatīśvara); he belonged to the Senagaņa; he com
