________________ canal is called the Puraka (inhalation). That very wind, when it is suspended and stopped at the navel, is called Kumbhaka. स्थानात्स्थानान्तरोत्कर्षः प्रत्याहारः प्रकीत्तितः । तालुनासाननद्वारनिरोधः शान्त उच्यते ।।८।। Meaning : The Pratyahara is that type of pranayam in which the breath is moved from one part of the body to another. When the breath is prevented from escaping through the palate, nostrils, or mouth, it is called the Shanta. Explanation : The difference between the Kumbhaka and Shanta is that in the former, the breath is held up at the navel while in the latter, it is prevented from escaping through the openings. पापीयोध्वं यत्कृष्य हृदयादिषु धारणम् । उत्तरः स समाख्यातो विपरीतस्ततोऽधरः ॥९।। Meaning : That pranayam in which the wind is drawn from outside and stored in the region of the heart is called the Uttara. When it is shifted to the lower parts of the body, such as the navel etc., it is named the Adhara. The Effect रेचनादुदरख्याधेः कफस्य च परिक्षयः । पुष्टिः पूरकयोगेन व्याधिघातश्च जायते ॥१०॥ विकसत्याशु हृत्पद्म प्रन्थिरन्तविभिद्यते । बलस्थैर्यविवृद्धिश्च कुम्भकाद् भवति स्फुटम् ॥११॥ Fifth Chapter 133 Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
