Hemchandra, through Kumarpala, deeply influenced the life and culture of the people of Gujarat. He was being consulted on all matters pertaining to public reforms as well as important political matters. Under the influence of Hemchandra, Kumarpala promulgated state ordinances prohibiting animal killings, gambling, and alchohol. Hemchandra also inspired Kumarpal to build temples and other religious abodes, and also to rennovate many old temples. Besides, this Kumarpal also started twenty one large libraries with copies of Hemchandra's works. The extent of Hemchandra's influence over Kumarpala can best be infered from the fact that Jain religion was made state religion during his reign.
Hemchandra died at a ripe age of 84 years in the year V. 1229 (A.D. 1173), a short time before the death of Kumarpala.

The period during which Hemchandra dominated the Indian intellectual scene was by no means a dull or even a mediocre period. There was no dearth of eminent scholars.
