आत्मा से बन्धन को प्राप्त हुए कर्मों का जब पूर्णरूप से जाश हो जाता है, तब यह जीव सही अर्थों में स्वतन्त्र हो जाता है । यह अवस्था सम्यग्दर्शन, सम्यग्ज्ञान और सम्यक्चारित्र के एकरूप होने पर ही प्राप्त होती है ।
सति धर्मिणि तद्धर्माः, चिन्त्यन्ते विबुधैरिह । भोक्तभावे ततः कस्य, मोक्षः स्यादिति नास्तिकः।।३।।
___Here the Nihilist (the Carvaka) objects: the wise consider is the qualities (dharmas) only when there is a substance (dharmin) indicated; in the absence of a soul who attains emancipation (i.e. whose freedom can be talked about?). (3) हिन्दी अनुवाद :
यहाँ मिथ्यावादी आक्षेप करता है कि वस्तु का निर्देश करने पर ही उसके गुणों का विचार किया जाता है । जब आत्मा का अस्तित्व ही सिद्ध नहीं है, तब उसके स्वतन्त्रता की चर्चा करना कहाँ तक उचित है ?
अस्ति आत्मा चेतनो, द्रष्टा पृथ्व्यादेरनन्वयात् । पिशाचदर्शनादिभ्योऽनादि शुद्धः सनातनः ।।४।।
(The Atmavadin says) : There is a soul. He is sentient and being the perceiver cannot be subsumed under such substances) as earth, etc. (He must be considered different from the body) on the analogy of perception of goblins, etc., (who do not have gross bodies). This soul moreover is eternally and forever pure.(4)
