(Flowing water is pure; stagnant water is dirty; a wandering asctic is not stained). On account of this reason, after Chaturmas is over on that day, all ascetics observing the five great principles proceed to other places. The third reason is that it is the Jayanti (the celebration of the birth-day) of the great writer, scholar and Jain Acharya, Hemachandra Suriji who is known as Kalikala Sarvajna and who composed three crore slokas. Hemachandracharya was born on Kartika purnima in Samvat 1145 and he undertook Deeksha in Samvat 1154; his original name was Changdeva. At the time of his undertaking Deeksha he was named Somachandra. But when he acquired Sooripada (the stage of an acharya) in 1166, he was named Hemachandracharya. He was a genius. He became an ascetic at the age of nine and he remained austere and celibrate through out his life. With the help of his mentor, he made a deep study of the Shastras. He was a prolific writer who wrote books on various literary subjects. He wrote valuable books such as Grammar, a Dictionary, Epic poetry and on the topics like the science of prosody; and history and achieved fame not only in Gujarat but through out India.
