________________ THISTORY FORGOTTEN VAN 509 1 town of Jrmbhika, he attained Kevalya, the supreme knowledge and intuition. During the next thirty years as a great teacher he travelled on foot from place to place giving his message of peace and goodwill for the good and benefit of all living beings, without any distinction of race, caste, creed, class, age or sex. His first sermon was delivered at mt. Vipula, one of the five hills which surrounded Rajagraha, the great Magadhan capital in the year 557 B.C. 1 His first and foremost disciple and the head of his male ascetic order was Indrabhuti Gautam who was master of Vedic lore but submitted himself to Mahavira's 1 knowledge Shrenik the king of Magadh was the first amongst many who became follower of Mahavira. Lord Budha was contemperory of Mahavira and he expressed his honour for 1 Mahavira many times. It has been now accepted that Budha first adopted chaturayams of Parswanath and than changed his mind. I may tell you that no preacher of Jainism was only king. To preach Jainism one | has to upgrade one self to the level of Sadhu. Kings participated in its expansion of their kingdom but in the end they had to accept the ascetic way of life. The fourth forgotten link is the typical geographical condition of this plateau. Many times it appeared that North and South were two totally different zones, which was incorrect. Rivers and mountains created safety and disaster parrallely but religious background remained the same. Early Jain History and Indian History are synonymous. Jain culture was known as shramanik culture and its existance has been accepted by Vedas & Purans prior! to recitation of Vedas. Harappan remains and other puranic description speak that! there was a society which was very much advanced. It knew Politics, Economics, 1 Writing, Science, management of living, Industry & Business Management, art & culture, city and harbour planing and above all philosophy resulting in Dhyan, 1 Kayotsarga and nudity being the principle to develop the individual ability by leaving things and become unattached with worldly things to attain ultimate peace. This culture is visible and depicted in Harappa remanins. We should note that Harappa 1 culture existed from the North and the South and East to West Before 3000 to 70001 years before Christ. Its root may be even more deep and spread may be large. It is so estimated because descriptions of Purans and life style of Harappan culture appears to be similar. Please look to few sides of architectural importance. The fifth forgotten link is ignorance about architectural remains. There are hundreds of remains and Historians could not reach to them and could not spell them properly. Take an example of shravanbelgula and kumargiri hills. Shravanbelgula tell us about chandra Gupta Maurya and kumargiri open the secrets of king kharavelabut Historians could not tape them. They Hypothicaled more and neglacted the proofs. 1st slide is the reproduction of a seal collected from ruins of Mohanjodaro. Some scholars have described this as- "in second row one saint is standing in Kayotsarg posture. Near the bull one shravak (his disciple) is worshiping him. In lower row 7
