________________ 507 The British administrator scholars concentrated their attention on dynastic histo1ries. The emphasis on the study of dynasties led to the division of Indian history into ancient, medieval and modern periods. Ancient India was taken to begin from the coming of the Aryans up to about 1000 AD. Medieval period extended from about 1000 A.D. to the coming of the British in the mid 18th century. Ancient India was described as Hindu India or Buddhist India, and Medieval India was described as 1 Muslim India. Emphasis was put on Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim religions. The result was that Hindu and Muslim predomination was accepted by both Indian and 1 non Indian Historians of India. They presumed that there was nothing in India be1 fore the recitation of Rigveda Hymns. However, that was incorrect. This periodization was misleading because it was based on the questionable assumption of Aryan Invasion, the acceptance of reli gion as motivating factor of change in Indian society, not visualising the effect of 1 Geography on History, not estimating the deeplying fundamental unity of India, not studying the architectural remains of India, not studying the inscriptions, not searching the Jain puranic references and above all not understanding the people of India in their reality. These misconceptions were preached for 3 centuries. Now after freedom Indian Historians are trying to identify the realities and interlink the clues of Indian culture. Now it has been proved that nothing like Aryan invasion took place in India. It has been accepted by Historians like maj gen J GR Furlong, FRAS, Prog. M.S. Ramaswamy Ayangar, Sir Shanmukham Chetty, G. Satyanarayan Murti, S.N. Gokhale, Dr. Hermann Jacobi etc. that Jainism existed even before the Rigveda ! Hymns were recited. This thought is in relevance with Jain references which is well supported with Harappan and other Archeological remains. Puranic references and under lying ! cultural current of the Indian society. This historical account has been given because the History taught even up to Nineteen sixties in India and abroad about India is full of semicorrect informations and in this Jain History has also been victimised. The British history has created misunderstandings betwen the Indian masses. They hypothicated the social break down in India which never happened. Inspite of religious differences, foreign invasions and natural calamities it remained one. The third forgotten link is the social and cultural graph of India which has not been seen with social growth of people which was hampered by foreign invasions and so called social workers who in the guise made cruel efforts to change the religion of the people. Jain Tirthankers have been wrongly pushed in to the narrowline of religion only. Any impartial student of Indian History can visualize that the genue flow of shramnik culture flowing from Rishabh to Parshwanath (Prior to Mahavir) was having its existence in whole of the country but growth of vedic culture made a serious cut to it. Jainism was compelled to centralise in few parts of Idia viz-central India, 1
