प्रस्तावना
के वास्तविक धर्म का प्रारंभ ही समत्व भाव से होता है. समत्व भाव के | अभाव में आत्मा क्रोधादि कषायों के पल्ले पड़ जाने के कारण अवनति के पथ पर गतिमान बन जाती है. परिणाम स्वरूप उसे जन्म जन्मांतर तक पुनः उन्नति का कोई रास्ता नहीं मिलता. इसीलिए आत्मोन्नति का श्रेष्ठ उपाय सामायिक माना गया है.
चतुर्विंशतिस्तव दूसरा आवश्यक है चौबीस जिनेश्वरों के गुणों का कीर्तन प्रायः मानव का यह स्वभाव होता है कि वह निन्दा किसी भी व्यक्ति की सरलता से कर सकता है, उस में उसे कोई संकोच नहीं होता. किन्तु यदि किसी के वास्तविक गुणों का दूसरों को परिचय देना होगा तो उसके लिए वह जरूर हिचकिचायेगा. स्व प्रशंसा व्यक्ति जरूर करेगा, किन्तु पर प्रशंसा वह कभी नहीं कर सकेगा. वह दूसरों के गुणों की निन्दा तो कर सकता है, किन्तु अपने अवगुणों की भी निन्दा वह नहीं कर सकता. परिणामतः वह अपने आत्म विकास में आगे नहीं बढ़ | सकता. जब व्यक्ति गुणवान के गुणों की प्रशंसा करना आरंभ करता है तब वह अपने आत्म विकास की नींव रखता है.

संसार के सर्वोच्च गुणवान व्यक्ति हैं तीर्थंकर परमात्मा; जिन्होंने राग और द्वेष पर विजय प्राप्त करके वीतरागता प्राप्त की है. उनके गुणों का कीर्तन करने से आत्मगुण शीघ्र ही विकसित होते हैं. इसी लिए चतुर्विंशति स्तव को आवश्यक क्रिया में समाविष्ट किया गया है.

moves in the directions of down fall due to lack of equanimity because of being in possession of ill-wills like anger. As a result any path of progress would not be found again till births and rebirths. Therefore sāmāyika is believed to be a best path for spiritual progress.

caturvinśati stava - The second necessity is the eulogy of virtues of twenty for jineśvaras. More or less it is the nature of man that he can censure any person easily. There will be no hesitation to him in it. But if introduction of real virtues of any one is to be given to others, then he will surely hesitate. He will surely do self praising, but he can never praise others. He can censure the virtues of others, but can't censure his own demerits. As a result he can't proceed further in his own self-uplift. When man starts praising the merits of meritorious persons, then he lays foundation of his spiritual progress
The supreme meritorious persons of the world are tirthankara paramātmās who have attained passionlessness by getting victory over passion and malice. Virtues of the soul develop soon by praising their virtues. Hence caturvinśati stava [eulogization of twenty four tirthankaras] has been included in āvaśyaka kriyā.
