વિકાસવાદ અને નીતિશાસ્ત્ર સાધ્વમાં જેટલું અધિક સામ્ય ઊપજે છે તેટલું આ અનુમાન અધિક દઢ બને છે.*
હવે કઈ કહી શકશે કે, મોબસ્કવર્ગ અને પૃષ્ઠવંશયુક્તવર્ગ જો કે અતિશય ભિન્ન છે પણ તેના પૂર્વજ એક જ હતા. પતંગિયા પટેન અને માણસના તદ્દન આરંભના કૃમિતીય પૂર્વજ એક જ હતા માટે ચક્ષુની સામ્યતા પૂર્વજ પાસેથી કેમ નહિ મેળવી હોય? પણ એ સંબંધમાં બર્ગસન કહે છે કે, આવા નાજુક ચનો ઉદ્ભવ થતા પહેલાં જ મોલસ્કવર્ગ અને પૂષ્ટવંશમુક્તવર્ગ વિભક્ત થયા હતા, એટલે તે જે વખતે વિભક્ત થયા તે વખતે એ નાજુક ચક્ષુનું અસ્તિતવ નહિ હોવાથી આનુવંશિક સંસ્કારથી તે પ્રાપ્ત થવાને સંભવ ન હો,

There is even that peculiar inversion which is not met with, in general, in the retina of the invertebrates. Now, the origin of mollusks may be a debated question, but whatever opinion we hold, all are agreed that mollusks and vertebrates were separated from their common parent Stem long before the appearance of an eye so complex as that of the Pecten. Whence then the structural analogy ?”
