"The elevation of the doctrine of Ahimsa to the highest position contributed to the downfall of India."
ભાવાર્થ “અહિંસાના સિદ્ધાંતને શ્રેષ્ઠ ગણી તેને એકદમ ઊંચી કક્ષાએ ચઢાવી દેવાથી ભારતવર્ષને અધઃપાત થયો છે.”
એ લેખમાં આગળ જતાં જૈનધર્મની અહિંસા પ્રત્યે પણ કટાક્ષ કરી પરાધીનતામાં કારણરૂપ બતાવેલી. એ સંબંધમાં ગાંધીજીએ જણાવ્યું કે
“During the past 1500 years we have us a nation given ample proof of physical courage, but we have been torn by internal dissensions and have been dominated by love of self instead of love of country. We have, that is to say, been swayed by the spirit of irreligion rather than of religion.
“I do know how far the charge of unmanliness can be made good against the Jains. I held no brief for them.
"Our Shastras seem to teach that a man who realy practises Abimsa in its fulness has the world at his feet; he so effects his surroundings that even the snakes and venomous reptiles do him no harm. This is said to have been the experience of St. Francis of Assisio...3140gra (Gift of life) is the greatest of all gifts."
"If we are unmanly to day, we are so, not because we do not know how to strike, but because we fear to die. He is no follower of Mahavir, the apostle of Jainism, who being afraid to die, takes flight before any danger, real or imaginary.”
ભાવાર્થ–શ્રી લાલા લજપતરાયે કરેલ આક્ષેપોના જવાબમાં ગાંધીજી જણાવે છે કે“છેલ્લાં ૧૫૦૦ વર્ષ દરમ્યાન એક દેશ તરીકે આપણે શારીરિક હિમ્મતના ઘણા પુરાવા આપ્યા છે, પણ આપણે આંતરિક ઝઘડાઓથી જીર્ણ થઈ ગયા છીએ અને દેશપ્રેમના સ્થાને આપણે સ્વાર્થપરાયણ થઈ ગયા છીએ. એમ કહી શકાય કે આપણે ધર્મ ભાવનાના બદલે અધર્મ ભાવનાનો ભોગ બન્યા છીએ.
હું કંઈ જૈનેનો બચાવ કરવા નથી માગતે, પણ (આપણ) નાહિમ્મત માટે જૈન ઉપર કેટલું દેખારાપણું થઈ શકે એનો મને બરાબર ખ્યાલ છે.
આપણાં શાસ્ત્ર તે એમ શીખવે છે કે જે માણસ સાચી રીતે સંપૂર્ણ અહિંસાનું આચરણ કરે છે તેના ચરણમાં આખી દુનિયા આવી પડે છે, તે આસપાસના વાતાવરણને એટલું પ્રભાવિત કરે છે કે સર્પ અને ઝેરી જાનવરે પણ તેને કશું નુકશાન કરતા નથી. એસીસીએના સંત ફ્રાન્સીસને આવો અનુભવ થયાનું કહેવાય છે......... અભયદાનને બધાં દાનોમાં શ્રેષ્ઠ દાન ગણવામાં આવ્યું છે.
" જે આપણે અત્યાર બાદ બની ગયા છીએ તે તેનું કારણ આપણે પ્રહાર કરવાનું ભૂલી ગયા છીએ એ નથી, પણ તેનું કારણ તે આપણે મરણુથી ડરતા થયા છીએ એવું છે. તે માણસ જૈન ધર્મના પયગંબર સમા માવાને અનુયાયી નથી કે જે પિતા ને કલ્પીન કે સાચું જ સામેથી નાસી છૂટે છે.
