Chapter 2: Characteristics of Sectarians
Explanation & Discussion:
Acquiring knowledge is not the end of spiritual pursuit. It is merely a beginning. The objective is to gain the state of enlightenment, and that cannot be realized without applying scriptural knowledge to ones internal tendencies. The restraints and austerities are meant to help the process of changing the internal tendencies in line with the true nature of the soul. Since a Nishchayäbhäsi exclusively resorts to only the absolute viewpoint, his understanding stays mostly at the verbal level. He tends to ignore the importance of detachment and other wholesome aspects and stays deprived of the right means for spiritual development.
Thus, standing devoid of enlightenment as well as of the right means, the sectarian stays far away from the path of liberation and remains engulfed in the vicious cycle of birth and death. However, the Nishchayäbhäsi may speak very well. He might attract many people by his apparently strong logic. The unsuspecting ignorant people, who are so attracted, may be induced to adopt his one-sided view. Thus they also become liable to be drowned in the sea of worldly existence.
