The work presented to the public in the following pages is the composition of an illustrious figure in the history of Sanskrta Literature. The present work-Linganusasana deals succinctly in thirty verses of the Arya metre with the genders of nouns in Sanskrta. Two more verses in the Vasantatilaka metre are added at the end by the author about the sources and himself. It is, as the author himself says at the end, based on the works of Vyadi, Vararuchi, and Chandra and on the Jainendra Vyakarana (of Devanandi alias Pujyapada).1 The commentary, which clearly explains the aphoristic verses, is written by the author himself. Linganusasanas-The following is the list of the Linganusasanas hitherto known.. The author-The author of the Linganusasana and the commentary is Vamana. He himself has mentioned his name in the last verse. We know of four works composed by Vamana:-(1) Part of the Kasika Vrtti, (2) Kavyalankarasutra and Vrtti, (3) Linganusasana, (4) Vidyadhara Vyakarana, mentioned in Vardhamana's Gaparatna 1 vyA DipraNItamatha vArarucaM sacAndraM jainendralakSaNagaMtaM vividhaM tathAnyat / Page #6 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ vi mahodadhi composed in Samvat 1197.1 It is to be seen whether these four works were composed by four different personages bearing the name of Vamana or by one person, who was both a grammarian and a rhetorician.. Vamana, the author of the Linganusasana, and his times.The date of Vamana, the author of the Linganusasana, can be fixed with certainty. He is posterior to the authors of the Chandra and Jainendra grammars, as these works are utilized by him in the present work. He has quoted one line of a verse which occurs in the Sisupalavadha of Magha.2 Magha was the grandson of Suprabhadeva, who was the minister of Varmalata, king of Bhinnamala. Varmalata is mentioned in the Vasantgadh inscription of Samvat 682 (A. D. 625). Magha must have, therefore, flourished about the end of the seventh century A. D. While commenting on the phrase Rajartha (Taru) in the 9th Karika of the present work, Vamana gives Jagattungasabha (Mg ) as an example of the case where the word Sabha (AT) forming the second part of a compound does not become neuter as it is preceded by a word indicating the name of a king and not meaning a king. Now history tells us that the Rashtrakuta Emperor Govind III was called Jagattunga. Various grants of this king are discovered and his reign is put between 794-813 A. D. This specification of the assembly of Jagattunga must have a special significance. It tells us not only that he was a contemporary of Jagattunga but that he must have been a member of his court. Vamana also mentions the name of Sribhavana as a village. Sribhavana is mentioned in the sVani-Dindori and Radhanpur plates of the same king as a place where he spent the rainy season with his army, while going to subdue the southern kings of Kanchi and Vengi. Kshirsvamin, and Rayamukuta. 8 Vamana's Linganusasana and the Vrtti are often found quoted by Hemachandra in the Vivarana on his Linganusasana. 4 Authors mentioned or quoted by Vamana.-Vamana mentions in the present work the names of Panini, Vyadi, Vararuchi and of the grammatical works-Chandra and Jainendra. There are also quotations from the Rgveda, Mahabharata, Mahabhashya, Harshacha rita and Sisupalavadha. Two quotations remain untraced. The geographical names mentioned in the present work.Vamana has mentioned in the present work a few geographical names. Some of these like Kasmira, Konkana, Varenda (Rajashahi Dist.) Tirabhukti (Tirhoot) Malavaka and Panchala are countries; some like Mathura and Kanyakubja are cities; while Tailavata, Srikantha, sribhavana, Lingashadhi, and Salukini are villages. He also quotes Kaviraja, who may be the same as that mentioned by Rajasekhara as a poet belonging to the Vayavara family. That he belongedo Kasmira is evident from the statements of Sahadeva, the earliest commentator of Vamana's Kavyalankarasutravstti, that the study of Vamana's work had fallen in desuetude and that Bhacta Mukula procured from somewhere a ms. of the work and revived its study, Sahadeva heard the work from Bhatta Mukula, who seems to be the same as the author of the Abhidhamatrka and the preceptor of Pratihara Induraja, the commentator on Udbhatalankarasarasangraha. The commentator Sahadeva, moreover, mentions at the end of his commentary his leaving Kabmirz. The rhetorician Vamana is, thus, posterior to Magha (latter half of the 7th century A. D.) and Bhavabhuti (first quarter of the 8th century A. D.). Vamana is quoted by Anandavardhana (about 857 to 084 A. D.) in his Dhvanyaloka and by Rajasekhara (about 880 tv 910 A. D.) - his Kavyamimansa. Thus it follows that the rhetorican Vanjana must have lived between the latter half of the 8th and the first quarter of the 9th century A. D. This date agrees with that which we have assigned to the author of tue Lingauukisan The religion of Vamana.--The absence of Mangala in the Katika has been taken to indicate that Vamana was not orthodox and the use of the Chandra and Jainendra gramniars tend to show his heterodox tendencies. In his Kayyalankarasutravitti a salutation is maue to no particular deity but to the great lustre. His drawing upon the Buddhist and Jain authors Chandra and Devanandi would also support the view about his leaning towards Buddhism and Jainism... Conclusion.-It is true that one sealhes in vain the Kasika, the Kavyalankarsutravrtti and the Linganusasana to find out indications to establish the identity of the authors of these works. But the old commentators of the Amarakosa quoti him both from the Kasika and . the Liganusasana under the name of Vamana without any distinction and we have assigned one and the same period to the authors of the Kavyalan karasutravrtti and the Linganusasana from quite independent data. The Kavyalankarasutravitti is described as favourite of poets (mafirat) and the Linganusasana is, likewise, as beneficial to poets (antalon)If it is assumed that there was one person Vamana, the author of all these works-a grammarian, poet, and rhetorician all combined. he would appear to have been at first at the court of Jayapida? and laterly probably through his oppressions to have left him and gone to the court of the Rashtrakuta Em ror Jagattunga who was at that time wielding paramount power. Such migrations of Kashmerian poets were not rare. The poet Bilhana's example is too well-known to the students of the history of Sanskrta literature. Tagattunga I and Jayapida 779-808 A, D, were contemporaries and thus the date of Vamana is between the last quarter of the 8th and the first quarter of the 9th century. From other data we have arrived at the same date. The Ms. material. The present edition of Vamana's Linganu. sasana has been based on a single palm-leaf ms. of the work with the commentary heitherto known. It is 101" inches long and 11" inches broad and consists of 42 leaves containing four lines each and is dated Samvat 1273 (1216 A. D.) The portions on the ft sides of the folios 35, 37 and 40 were niissing. The ms. belongs to the Sangha's Bhandar. in Phophalia Vada, Patan. Thre is in the palm leaf mss. of Bhandar in Santinatha's temple at Cambay a ms, of the text of the Karikas (No. 266, folios 63-66) dated Samyat 1287 (1231 A. D.) and from that the late Dr. Peterson published in his third report the bare text, which had been edited very incorretly partly because of not reading the palm-leaf ms. correctly and the absence of
