Tr.- This your effort in war produced by your valour will not bear fruit like the blooming flower of a barren tree, for the acquisition of enjoyment (by you) while I (your rival) am superior to you and more powerful than you due to (my) prowess. For atraret, see Introduction. 9. For the implication of hetua see Introduction. Bare quelqu:, highly intelligent (persons). fuqur is the usual form of the word. eftery is not recorded by MW. 10. As the words '45759gar affat make no sense they have been emended to 'mupendravajrAM nRpa to giranti. nRpa and giranti are used in this emendation as these very words occur in the definitions of 18 and rear in stzs. 9 and 12 respectively. 10, 1. 1. 27...577 Hez19:, these words explain how the givet occurs in stz. 8 above. 10, 1. 2. Fua, I have not been able to trace this stz. in the Turtar. But I have traced it with minor variations, in four other medical treatises vix (1) Ifa's ondas , a com, on the HLIFET4 ( N. S. edn. p. 629 where Page #27 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ 22 KAVIKAUSTUBHA it is quoted as from vaGgasene tRSNAdhikAre); (2) the cikitsAsArasaMgraha of vaGgasena (B. O. R. Institute Ms. no. 535 of 1892-1895, fol. 348. fa hETONE and FachrataAFE are the alternate titles of this work ). Here it occurs as the last stanza in ETHET fy which is a part of the JIGGESETT. Hence it is evident that thife's anga zoti fi is a reference to this very work. (3) 2017 (author not known. B. O. R. I. Ms. no. 1073 of 1886-1892, fol. 5a); (4) fratrem (AnSS vol. 4, p. 243). 11. But none of these four works, in spite of other variations, read fazemic in the second line. As given in our text the second line contains only 11 syllables in 302571 metre, whereas the remaining three lines contain 12 syllables, the first and the second line are in 181, and the fourth in FETT Now there occur's here the zalagat because of the unequal combination of three lines (a, e, d) in 12 syllables and one of 11 syllables (b), as shown under 7 above. But our author does not notice the discrepancy in the second line (perhaps he might have read prakalpayet as in the cikitsAsArasaMgraha, hemAdri's com. and fra, and fault is to be attributed to a scrible error ), and picks the t of chandobhraSTa as there is a mixture of vaMzastha (a,c) and indravaMzA (d), This however, is not reasonable. For, a combination of two metres having the same number of syllables and differing but slightly from each other is allowed in books on Prosody. cf. the acant quoted in notes on stz. 7 above. In fact, vaidyanAthazAstrI in his viSamasthala Tippana on the vRttaratnAkara KSS. p. 79, cites the stz. a: 59 etc. as an instance of 577ifa arising out of the mixture a 9851, the first three lines of which are in aer and the last in pear. 12. FTTETTE, Taft TT 946777 i. e. 10th and 12th syllables. The vRttaratnAkara 3.47 thus defines the indravaMzA - syAdindravaMzA tatajai rasaMyutaiH ( KSS. 55. p.78). phaNibhASitAM, declared by phaNin i. e. piGgala, " the supposed author of the Chandas or Treatise on Metre regarded as one of the Vedangas, identified by some with Patanjali, the author of the Mahabhasya". But strangely enough our author looks upon this as an instance of sathalu, for according to him in the third line the 197scheme would not be ja ta jara as required in vaMzastha, but ya ta jara as na in prasUna preceds a conjunct consonant viz. Fe But z being a vowel Faz cannot be called a conjunct (Fatar, SEOTT: : - 18.8.19). Perhaps here the author wants to display his minute knowledge of grammar; for acc. to T. 4..86 EHUT there is a portion of in Frey and as stated in the Mahabhasya vaNakadezagrahaNe varNagrahaNam, kla in klaptiM may be looked upon as a conjunct made up of and 2, and as such making the preceding a prosodically long. 13, I 3. fiaturengerata, (Hatari Terait) as a syllable preceding a conjunct (saMyoga) becomes metrically long. As the verb off or an is to be understood in this stz. our author picks the fault fight in it. But it may be remarked that many verses would be found to contain this fault, if the omission of safer is a fault at all. For, the maxim astirbhavantIparaH aprayujyamAnopyasti allows the omission of asti, and it would be over-fastidiousness to insist on the actual expression of 3FT in a sentence. It would be a real UKT ang if any other verb, the omission of which makes the sentence unintelligible is not expressed as in 377) CAF etc. Jabatayaqace, JETT STA Fynd. It is not known whether this Mayura is identicle with the author of the Suryas'atalca, who flourished in the 7th century A. D, and was reputed the father-in-law of Bana. If we can ascertain the chronology of the king Virasena mentioned in the following stanza, then we might know the upper limit of Mayura's period. 52. The destruction by one king Virasena of his enemies in the battle is metaphorically described in the this stanza as a sacrifice. The chief of his enemies ( ET) is represented as an animal offered as on oblation in this sacrifice. But our author finds the fault o in this stanza. 52, 11. 1-2. The fault of occurs in this stanza as the mentiou of arrows and swords as blades of darbho-grass and wooden ladles respectively is oppesed (fast) to the description of the enemy as sacrificial animal, for it is killed at the sacrifice not by swords and arrows but by mere fists, and as such it does not prove the valour of the king. 53. quffaqiffa--the complete stanza runs as follows: cayastviSAmityavadhAritaM purA tataH zarIrIti vibhAvitAkRtim / vibhurvibhaktAvayavaM pumAniti kramAdamuM nArada ityabodhi saH // This stanza describes how Narada appeared to Krsna, while he was descending from the heaven to the earth. But according to our author this involves the fault be as what is described as a mass of lustre is later described as an embodied being a male and Narada; and this being opposed to the earlier description in the same stanza is regarded as constituting the fault ost. 54. According to Sanskrit rhetorcians there are four kinds of poetic diction or vaidI, gauDI, pAMcAlI and lATikA. When two (or more) of these are mixed up in one and the same stanza, the fault fage arises. The Gaudi style is characterized by preponderance of compounds. (FATF i. e. Aftagh); cf. Here the first line is one compound and therefore in Gauli style, while the second apparently does not contain any compounds; the words quyr and are really compounds but they are hardly noticed as such; hence there arises the fault Afdhe. 56. D. 1675 AND 1700 S'ri P. K. Gode, M. A. Aufrecht mentions no work of the title kavikaustubha. Dr. S. K. De's History of Sanskrit Poetics also contains no mention of any work of this title. Recently I came across a Ms. of this work through the favour of Vaidya Sivarama Khandekar of Nasik. He was under the impression that this work was composed by his grand-father Raghava Kavi' or Raghunath Appa Khandekar of Punya-stambha or Puntambe in the Ahmednagar District of the Bombay Presidency. On examination I find that the Ms. of afatenH is not a work of Raghava Kavi but that it belonged to him as I find from the endorsement towards the end of the Ms. As this work on rhetorics is unknown to Sanskritists I shall describe the present Ms. and determine the Chronology of its author Ragunatha Manohara. The Ms. begins : " // zrIgaNezAya nmH|| atha kAvyaprabaMdhAnAM zalyarUpAnsamAsataH / doSAnvakSye krameNaiva pUrvAcAyaH pradarzitAn // 1 // chandobhraSTaM kriyAvyastaM kramahInamasaMmitaM / apArtha vyastasaMbaMdhaM zliSTAgamavirodhi ca // 2 // yatibhraSTaM tathA nyUnapadaM caikArthameva ca / vyartha rItiparibhraSTamavasthAdadhyabhedakam // 3 // tathA dezakalAnyAyakAlahetuvirodhikaM / khaNDitAdhipade caiva tathA hInopamasmRtam // 4 // iti vAkyAtmakA doSAH padadoSAstataH kramAt / svasaMketapraklaptArthamaprasiddhamalakSaNam // 5 // 'bhagauravaM zrutikaTu punaruktirasaMmataM / vyAhatArtha tathA grAmya padadoSAH smRtA yathA // 6 // " 1. I am preparing a special paper on the unknown works of Raghave Kavi who flourished between A. D. 1758 and 1820 or so. 2. This MS contains 25 folios and is written on country paper. It is well preserved and appears to be about 150 years old. It contains the following post-colophon endorsement: ___ "pustakamidaM khANDekaropanAmaka ApAjIpaMtAtmaja raghunAthanAmnaH satyaM zrImatpuNyastambhakSetre likhApitam // zrIlakSmIvAsudevArpaNamastu // " Many works of Raghava were composed and written at puNyastambhakSetra or Puntambe. Institute, Poona) No. 600 of 1899-1915 and No. 636 of 1895-1902. They are described by Dr. H. D. Sharma on pp. 363-364 of his Des. Cata. of Vaillyaka Mss. (Vol. XVI, Part I), 1939. MS No. 600 of 1899-1915 is dated Saka. 1736 = A. D. 1814. It belonged to one parrehit ailfar (Dinkar Joshi). In some colophons the author is called "kavikulAvaMtasa raghunAthapaMDita" (See fol 98). In the Ms of kavikaustubha also he is called "kavikulAvaMtasa raghunAthapaMDita". The author refers to himself as "kabirAghava" in verse 2 at the commencement: "saduktibhAjAM kavirAghaveNa vitanyate vaidyavilAsa eSaH". The work is styled as "mahAkAvya". No. 636 of 1895-1902 is a very modern copy without date. In the Gotravali of Konknastha or Chitpavana Brahmins we find the surname manohara. Tho Gotra of the manohara family is bhAradvAja (hiraNyakezI.) The MS of the aufa described in the India Office Catalogue mentions to as the surname of its author raghunAthapaMDita. D. 1524-1593 (Vide p. 341 of bhaTTojI-dIkSita-jJAtiviveka in Marathi by Rao Bahadur W. A. Bambardekar, Bombay, 1939). It will be seen from the above references that the latest works mentioned by the author of the kavikaustubha are (1) muhUrta ciMtAmaNi of A. D. 1600 and (2) kuvalayAnaMda of Appaya Diksita (A. D.1550-1600 or so). We must, therefore, conclude that he flourished after about A. D. 1650. As our author seems to be identical with his name-sake kavikulAvataMsa-raghunAthapaMDita manohara author of the vaiyavilAsa composed in A. D. 1697 the date of kavikaustubha may be between A. D. 1675 and 1700 or so. So far only one work of this author viz." dataare on Medicine was known. The present account of the fastest proves conclusively that he composed this work on Poetics as well. We have seen above that in this work he refers to and quotes from a work on Prosody called the getrara composed by him "madviracitachandoravAvalyAm" in two places. As no such work has been discovered so far I quote below the verses from this work as quoted by raghunAtha manohara:Folio Pa-" zatra chandasi madviracitachandoratnAvalyAm // . yadi dvitIyaM ca caturthapaJcamaM tathASTamaM tadazamaM bhavedguru / / yadAkSaraM dvAdazakaM mahIpate giranti vaMzasthamanalpadhIpaNAH // yadA dvitIyaM ca tathA caturtha sakhe bhavetpaMcamakaM ca dIrgha / tathASTamaM vA dazamaM tathAnyam upendravajrAraSpu(?)punA gItA // " Page #48 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ APPENDIX Folio sa-" atra prathamacaturthacaraNayoryatibhaGge / chandoratnAvalyAm / sakhe yadi ca SaSThakaM tadanucASTakaM dvAdazaM dvitIyamapi yatra vA guru ca ssoddshaayaantygau| caturdazamaya kramAtsakalabhAgyavArAMnidhe zrutidvayasarIsRpairviratiraGga pRthvI matA // " .. It is clear from the above three verses quoted by our author that he composed this greizarare earlier than his composition of the asfararegu. Perhaps a Ms. of Raghunatha's chandoranAvali may be discovered hereafter. The present paper has added two more works to the only work aralasia of Raghunatha, known to the students of the history of Sanskrit literature. It has also given us the names of his father for and his grandfather kRSNapaNDita not found in the Mss. of the vaidyavilAsa as we find them described in our Catalogues of Sanskrit Mss. The genealogy of raghunAtha manohara thus goes back to about A. D. 1600. As regards the native place of Raghunatha we learn from the India Office. Ms. of the vaidyavilAsa that it was caMpAvatI which has been wrongly identified with Bhagalpur by Dr. Eggelinge in his description of this Ms. As the author was a 1. B. B.R. A.S, Mss Catalogue by H. D. Velankar. Vol. I, 1925 describes 2 Mss of the Vaidyavilasa. He describes the work as follows on p.70: "A popular treatise on medicine in 10 Chapters (tarangas ) composed in 1697 A.D. by Raghunathapandita of the Manohara family and a resident of caMpAvatI (bhAgalapUra). See also p. 46, Ibid and Da Cunha's History of Chaul and : Bassein, pp. 3-11). Page #49 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ KAVIKAUSTUBHA Deccani Brahmin his residence must have been somewhere in the Deccan. This suggestion gets confirmation from the identification of siqaaft with Chaul as we find it in the following verse in the S'ivabharata or Kavindra Paramananda composed for Shivaji before A. D. 1674. Chap. XXVIII, 59--Here the Mogul General Shaista Khan orders another Muslim Sardar to conquer igraeft: " Terra pre turge tagreit atent'l Qurant gaiarreari ar TATAATT II 48 \"? Apart from the usage of the name ciraat for Chaul as found in a poem of the latter part of the 17th Century, when Raghunatha Manohar lived at this place we may note here the fact that Chaul or Revdanda (in the Alibagh Sub-division of the Kolaba District of the Bombay Presidency) is a place of great antiquity. "Under the names of rare and tada local Hindu traditions trace it to the times when Krishna reigned in Gujarat." We may now sum up the facts so far brought forth regarding the life-history and literary activity of matu as follows: (1) Raghunatha Manohara composed the following works:(1) Salaore on Medicine composed in a. D. 1697. (2) getratates a work on prosody mentioned and quoted in the afable--No Ms. discovered so far. 1. fantasie ferage = 4410; aftagi = first; quran anda; ATTENTE ** atrico. Shaista Khan gave the above order during his Camp at Poona (guage feat TEE:) 2. Vide p. 376 Imperial Gazetteer Vol. III (1885). From the History of Charl recorded here we learn that Chaul was known to Ptolemy ( A.D. 150 ) to the author of the Periplus of the Erethrean Sea ( A.D. 247) and to Hwen Thsang ( A.D. 642), The Arab travellers of the 10th, 11th and 12th centuries also refer to it. The subsequent travellers to refer to Chaul are :-(1) Nikitin ( A.D. 1470 ), Fean Hugues ( A.D. 1583 ). In 1505 A.D. the Portuguese first appoared at Chaul. Kavi Vrnda's Hayat mentioned by Aufrecht (CC III, 88 ) appears to be a Hindi work. Vide B. O. R. Institute No. 964 of 1892-95"fa star far esta para fa ". The M8 records two dates viz.
