The soul (jiva) with devotion to the Arhat, the Siddha, their idols (pratima), the Scripture (agama, sastra), the congregation of ascetics (munigana), and the knowledge (jnana), gets bound with excessive merit (punya). The fact is that it (such devotion) does not destroy the karmas. EXPLANATORY NOTE The soul (jiva) with devotion to the Arhat, etc., although with 'suddha-samprayoga', but being stained with auspicious (subha) attachment (raga) is with auspicious-cognition (Subhopayoga). It is the cause of the bondage of excessive meritorious karmas. As a corollary, it does not cause the destruction of all karmas and, hence, cannot attain liberation (moksa). Even the slightest of attachment (raga), albeit auspicious (subha), needs to be given up. .. . .. . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. 317
