હેમચંદ્રાચાર્ય
૧૫ ગુજરાતની આજની સંસ્કૃતિમાં હેમચંદ્રાચાર્યે એકલાએ આપેલે આ ફાળે જે-તે નથી. બીજી પણ એક વસ્તુ, આ પ્રતિભા વિષેની ચર્ચા કરતાં, નજર સમક્ષ રહેવી ઘટેઃ માત્ર સૌન્દર્યદર્શન એ જ પ્રતિભાનું એકમાત્ર કામ નથી. પણ પ્રણાલિકા એવી થઈ ગઈ છે કે સૌન્દર્યદર્શન એ જ જાણે કે પ્રતિભાશાળીપણું માટે એકને એક માપદંડ હોય. અને પ્રતિભા એટલે કાવ્યત્વ, નાટકરચના વગેરે. પણ સૌન્દર્ય. દર્શન ઉપરાંત માનવને બીજી પણ બે બળવાન શક્તિ મળેલી હોય છે, એમાંની એક શક્તિ શુદ્ધ જ્ઞાનને શોધનારી છે અને બીજી, જેને નૈતિક શુદ્ધિ કહીએ, એ માટે આગ્રહી હોય છે. એમાંથી કોઈ પણ એક શક્તિવાળે, બીજી શક્તિ ઓછી ધરાવતું હોય એ સંભવિત છે, પણ એથી બીજી શક્તિઓનું મૂલ્ય ઓછું આંકવું એ બરાબર નથી. *
