INTRODUCTION
(d) The accepted reading in the text, on which there is a
foot-note 14 (p. 160). This reading 'viharamānassa' is
yielded by no ms. exceptes. (e) That accepted reading in the text, on which there is a
footnote 14 (p. 168), is found in the Cūrni and Päiyaţikā. (f) The accepted reading in the text, on which there is a
foot-note 10 (p. 292), is found only in the Päiyaţika and
the Nemicandriyaţikā. 2. The readings yielded by 9 ms. only and found accepted in
the Cūrni but not accepted in the present critical edition are
noted in foot-notes 18 (p. 112), 16 (p. 138) and 12 (p. 154). 3. The readings yielded by ë ,ms. only but found in Paiyaţika
are noted in foot-notes 10 (p. 167), 11 (p. 169) and 1 (p. 270). Again, this is the only ms. except is, which yields readings
noted in foot-notes 14, 20 and 23 on page 300. 4. The author of the Päiyatika has recorded different variants.
Some of them are found in 9 ms. alone. These variants are noted in foot-notes 11 (p. 112), 19 (p. 144), 3 (p. 164), 25 (p. 182), 21 (p. 190), 19 (p. 191), 2 (p. 200), 11 (p. 200), 17 (p. 226), 12 (p. 227), 18 (p. 228), 3 (p. 263), 6 (p. 264), 16 (p. 287), 21 (p. 288), 25 (p. 288), 1 (p. 289), 29 (p. 289), 1 (p. 290), 20 (p. 294), 8 (p. 298), 11 (p. 301), 12-13 (p. 303), 13 (p. 304) and 8 (p. 307).
The reading noted in the foot-note 19 on p. 144 is found in 3 ms. also. 5. The 9 ms. has helped me in taking decision as to whether
the concerned two gáthas occurring in the text are inter
polated. Refer to foot-notes 12 (p. 108) and 11 (p. 174). 6. The 9 ms. yields a Prakrit form 'yasassi' which is very close
to the Sanskrit form 'yaśasvi'. All other mss. have at this place the reading "jasisi'. Refer to the foot-note 6 on
p. 200. 7. After having recorded the verbal form 'gacchasi' occurring
in sūtra 325 the authors of the Paiyaţikā and the Nemicandrīyatīká explain it in the sense of 'gamisyasi'. But it is only the 9 ms. that yields the reading 'gacchisi' which fits
well in the context. Refer to the foot-note 14 on p. 130. 8. This ms. yields a good number of readings that are neither
found in any other ms. nor recorded in any commentary. They are noted in foot-notes 2 (p. 164), 5 (p. 165), 9 (p. 165), 17 (p. 166), 3 (p. 168), 1 (p. 169), 1 (p. 170), 1 (p. 171), 16 (p. 176), 5 (p. 177), 4 (p. 178), 6 (p. 178), 15 (p. 178), 19 (p. 178), 21 (p. 178), 24 (p. 186), 10 (p. 189), 14-15 (p. 192), 2 (p. 193), 10 (p. 193), 19 (p. 193), 7 (p. 195), 21 (p. 195), 22
