One reading accepted by the authors of the Paiyațīkā and the Nemicandrīyaţikā is not available in any of the mss. used. It is noted in the foot-note 17 (p. 260). From the above account it becomes clear that no ms. yields all the sutra-padas accepted in the old traditional recension. One may find one or two mss. yielding some of these sütra-padas if one devotes too much time for scrutinising the mss. preserved in different Bhandāras. TEXT OF THE UTTARĀDHYAYANASŪTRA AND ITS CRITICAL EDITION First of all I would like to acquaint the readers with some important readings accepted in the recension prevalent in the days of the author of the Cūrni : 1. The third quarter of the seventh verse occurring in the sixth chapter (Sūtra No. 168) is 'dogumchi appano pãe'. This is the reading yielded by all the mss. Rven the explanation in the Paiyaţika and the Nemicandriyaţikā at this concerned place follows this reading. If this reading, even as a variant, were before the author of the Cūrni, he would have certainly noted it as variant because he has noted many readings as variants in his Cūrni. The only reading that was before the author of the Cūrņi was 'appano pānipäe [? tu]'. This is the reason why he explains it as 'jinakalpikam pratītya'. Refer to foot-note 7 (p. 109). The author of the Paiyațīkā has recorded at many places readings accepted by the author of the Curņi. But he has not recorded this reading accepted by the author of the Cūrni. This is noteworthy. 2. The verse 204 (26th verse of the seventh chapter) was not in the body of the text in the days of the author of the Cūrni, but the second half of this verse has been recorded by him as a variant of the verse 203 (25th verse of the seventh chapter). That is, the author of the Cūrni explicitly states that some recite 'püidehanirohenar bhave deve tti me slyam' in place of 'soccă neyāuyam maggam jam bhujjo paribhassai' (the second half of the verse 203). All the mss. do not regard 'püideh'' etc., as a variant of 'soccã etc. They consider it to be the second half of the sūtra-verse the first half of which, found in all the mss., is 'ihakāmaniyattassa attaţthe Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
