INTRODUCTION
25. If one finds the quotations given in foot-notes from the commentaries different from those contained in the concerned printed edition, one should consider them to be contained in the concerned old mss. Again, when it is not explicitly stated that the quotation is from the printed edition, one should take it to be one from the old ms. and should consider it to be in consonance with the concerned portion of the text of the Uttarādhyayanasūtra.
26. The present volume contains three Āgamas. Three appendices are added to each one of them. They are: Index of sūtras (sūtränukrama), Index of words (sabdānukrama) and Index of proper names (visesanāmānukrama). Thus in all there are nine appendices. In all the three appendices pertaining to the index of words, against each word we have mentioned the places where it occurs. The words at, 3, UIT, = TC, 371, =a, F= fa, a, a, a=91, and fà are used so frequently that it is not possible for me to note the places of their occurrence. Hence I have not given places of their occurrence. Again, the specific meanings in which words having more than one meanings are used are given against them. For the benefit of the students some words are given with case-endings as also with their Sanskrit synonyms. One special noteworthy feature is that the readings yielded by palm-leaf ms., which contain a śruti in the beginning or the middle of the word, when followed by a vowel, are recorded in foot-notes. Though it is not proper to include these words in the Index, we have included them in it so that the students may have an idea of them. If some one is working on the only ms. of some Prakrit work, yielding 'a' śruti at innumerable places, he will be helped by these words listed in the Index of words. This will lessen his burden.
