sūtras. So, I too have accepted the abridged version of these sūtras. The printed editions to and no contain in the body of the text the unabridged version of these six sūtras. This unabridged version in these two editions should be regarded as the editors' expanded version of the original abridged version. Even the scholar who has corrected
9 ms. has given in the margin the expanded version of the original abridged version of the sūtras 1170-1172, having put a mark of addition after their abridged version; he has done so in order that readers may have clear idea of the unabridged version.
20. In the verse 1355 (verse 10 of Chapter XXXIII) there occurs a sūtra-pada 'kasāyaveyanijjam'. The printed editions TO, 976 and ão as also the mss. , and gl 9 contain the sūtra-pada “kasayamohanijjam' in its place. The Pāiyatīkā explanation follows the sūtra-pada kasāyaveyanijjam. So, I have accepted this sūtra-pada in the body of the text. The Cūrni and the Nemicandrīyatīkā do not explain this portion. This makes it clear that I have accepted readings after having scrutinized and weighed even the readings yielded by old mss. Refer to foot-note 6 on p. 86. In this foot-note I have pointed out that the correctness of the reading kasāyaveyanijjań can be proved even on the basis of the Pannavanāsutta.
21. The printed editions To, To and ho as also the mss. except à 9 and contain one more pada 'muni' after the last pada 'ahitthae' of the verse 1431 (verse 61 of Chapter XXIV). This pada 'muni' seems to have been interpolated by some one on the basis of the pada 'muni' which the authors of the Paiyatīkā and the Nemicandriyațīkā have suggested to clarify the context and meaning. Refer to foot-note 22 on p. 292.
22. The verse 1512 (verse 60 of Chapter XXXVI) is available in all the mss. as also in the Nemicandrīyatīkā. But the Päiyaţikā records it as a verse available in another version. Refer to footnote 6, p. 303.
23. The verse 1519 is found in all the mss. But in the Päiyațīkā and the Nemicandriyatikā it is stated that the verse was not available in mss. following different version. Refer to foot-note 3 on p. 304.
24. The verse 1639 (verse 187 of Chapter XXXVI) is not available in the printed editions ato, qto and ão as also in some of the mss. But from the explanation of the concerned portion of the text, given in the Paiyatīkā and the Nemicandrīyatīkā, it becomes clear that the verse is not an interpolation but is an original one. To arrive at this conclusion I have scrutinized 33 mss. I have written an extensive foot-note 19 on p. 318. There I have drawn attention to the mistake inadvertently committed by the editors of the Päiyatīkä and the Nemicandrīyatīkā.
