________________ -46. 331 NOTES 381 34)2a metrically defective; better तयोविनय. 11d Better तं परीक्षितुम्. 180 Better समुज्वलतयोपेते मधु. 35) The Prakrit verse quoted by प्रभाचन्द्र, आशाधर ( Intro. p. 74) and नेमिदत्त is nearly identical. The verse found in the उत्तराध्ययननियुक्ति (p. Ba of the Poona Ms.) runs thus : चोल्लगपासगधन्ने जूए रयणे अ सुमिणचके अ। चम्मजुगे परमाणू दस दिढ़ता मणुअलंमे ॥; see उपदेशपद of Haribhadra, gathas 4-15.also Charpentier's notes on the उत्तराध्ययन, p. 291. In all there are ten दृष्टान्तs suggested by catchwords in this Prākrit verse. Tre and give ten stories corresponding to ten illustrations. So far as हरिषेण's stories are concerned (Nos. 35-44), their distribution stands thus: चुल्लय 35, पास 36, धणं 37-38, जूवा 39-40, रदणाणि 41-42. 1-2, सुमिण 42. 3-6, चकं 43-44. 1-5, कुम्मं जुग परमाणु 44 (verses 6-17, 18-19, 20-21). So two stories are assigned to you and yar; and three items are put in one story or section. Thus though there are ten stories, their distribution in sections is not quite consistent. श्रीचन्द्र and प्रभाचन्द्र put अथवा in giving two stories on धण्णं and जूवा. 70 शिष्यापितः, perhaps a wrong reading for शिक्षापितः शिक्षयितः giving the sense of शिक्षितः. 26 Are we to read मद्धिताहित? 34 Corresponding to verses 34-35 of हरिषेण, श्रीचन्द्र gives a prose definition in Sanskrit (p. 36a) and it runs thus: महाकल्याणोपेतं पूर्व चक्रवर्तिगृहे भुक्त्वा पश्चात्समस्तान्तःपुरसामन्तचक्रग्रामपुरनगरखेटकर्वटपत्तनादिषु गृहे गृहे दानसन्मानप्रतिपत्तिपूर्वकं यद्धज्यते तच्चोल्लयमिति भण्यते।. 37) 9 The second line presents some difficulties. 10a Rather एवं मविजमाणं. 39) 3 कर्ता dice, see मृच्छकटिक II, 5-6. 40) 3c Note रम् is transitively used. Should we read ततस्तोषं? In view of the meaning सपराक्रमः given by the Ms. 4, are we to read सशक्तिकः? 13d वा = इव. 42) The first two verses really form an independent story which is an alternative for the previous story. This is clear from प्रभाचन्द्रs remark : अथवा सागरदत्तहस्तसमुद्रपतितरत्नदृष्टान्तः।.43) 1c पराभागे? 44) 20 लभ्यन्ते = लप्स्यन्ते? 45) 3d भीषयन् , at times परस्मैपद also as in the epics. 12 The metre is मत्तमयूरी. 17d ममार in the sense of मारयामास; see also 53. 21. 27 Better सारं सारं. 20c Note इमं भवनं. प्रभाचन्द्र adds one more story, which appears to be connected with No. 589 of the भग, आरा. and which should come between Nos. 45-46 of हरिषेण's कोश. The story is a short one and the version given by आशाधर (Intro. p. 75) closely agrees with it. प्रभाचन्द्र's story runs thusचन्द्रपरिवेषणाद्भुक्तमिति । . The story becomes intelligible and the confusion also possible only on the ground that in the original Prākrit story a common word for both art and that was there, and it might have been some word like *परिवेसो. If the story was originally in Sanskrit, the words TRT and fas are so independent that no misunderstanding is plausible. 46) 31d अध्यासित reminds as of the Prakrit अहियास, to endure, to put up with etc., in the context of परीषहs. 33 Causal forms like कारापयति, कारापयामि (40), कारापयसि (54.29), with the augment आप, are quite usual with our author. In this section, the story begins with verse 34 and the contents of the first 33 verses have nothing to do with it. They present an independent dogmatical topic (verse 2) which is just a Sanskrit rendering of a small prose text in Prākrit, called # f5ft, already printed at the close of the Sholapur edition of भगवती आराधना (pp. 1875-6).
