હેઝનને વિશ્વાસ છે કે આ પ્રત્યેક અલટપલટના ચક્રની મધ્યમાં પૃથ્વીના ચુંબકીય ક્ષેત્રનું થડા સમય માટે અદશ્ય થવા છતાં પણ આ પ્રગતિશીલ પરિવર્તન થઈ શકે છે. આ ચુંબકીય ક્ષેત્રના અભાવમાં બ્રહ્માંડ-કિરણોવાળાં તો જે બાહ્ય અંતરિક્ષનાં કેટલાંક ઉચ્ચ શક્તિવાળાં તને નાશ કરી શકે છે, તે વિનાવિકને પૃથ્વી ઉપર વરસ્યાં હતાં. તેમાંથી ઘણાં બ્રહ્માંડ-કિરણયુક્ત તત્ત્વોએ જીવંત પ્રાણીઓના પ્રાણતત્વમાં પરિવર્તન અને હાનિ કરવા માટે વાયુમંડળમાં પ્રવેશ કર્યો, જેથી કેટલાંક પ્રાણીઓની જાતિ નાશ પામી ગઈ. બીજી કેટલીક જાતેમાં પરિવર્તન થયું.
