held divergent views on single topics. The word ādeśa was used for a viewpoint. This agama is supplementary in nature. Hence it embodies various view-points of the sthaviras. The commentator uses ādesa in the sense of “kinds”.1 In essence the compilation of various viewpoints is clearly proved. In Jivājīyābhigame, 2/20, we find four ādeśas whereas in 2/48 there are five. The commentator is of the view that only the extraordinarily gifted persons can pass a judgment as to which of five aleśas is proper. There were no such gifted persons during the period of the sthaviras, hence the commentator has obviously abstained from expressing his own views on the subject. He has simply compiled the available adeśas.
The sthaviras are the authors of this āgāma. This is clearly indicated at the beginning of the āgama.3 Commentaries
Two commentaries are available on this sūtra-one by Acārya Haribhadra, and the other by Ācārya Malayagiri. The former is concise whereas the latter is quite eloborate. Malayagiri's vịtti contains the ascription "iti vśddhäḥ" as well as the mention of the original text, the commentator and the cürņi at several places :
'iti vặddhāḥ 4 ‘iyam ca vyākhyā mūlaţikānusāreņa kstā? fuktañca mülatīkāyām8 'āha ca mūlațīkākst? tâi ca mülaţikākstā vaiviktyena na vyākhyātā iti sampradāyādavaseyāḥ°8 mūlaţikākāreņāvyākhyānāt": ‘āha ca mulațīkākāraḥ---uktam cūrņau'10
