vows may or may not be followed by attaining righteousness. However, as a rule one must serve the guru.
सम्मा पलियपुहतेऽवगए कम्माण भावओ हुंति। वयपभिईणि भवण्णवतरंडतुल्लाणि नियमेण ॥ १ ॥
७१. सम्यक्त्व प्राप्ति के पश्चात् मोहनीय आदि कर्मों की स्थिति पल्योपम पृथक्त्व अर्थात् २ से ९ पल्योपम जितनी शेष रहने पर संसाररूपी समुद्र पार करने के लिए नौका के समान व्रतादि नियमत: / अवश्य होते हैं।
71. After attaining the state of righteousness, when the extinction of Mohaniya and other karmas is less then two to nine palyopams (a conceptual unit of time) away, the will to observe vows is born essentially. These vows are like a boat to cross the ocean of mundane life.
पंच उ अणुव्वयाई, धूलगपाणवहविरमणाईणि। उत्तरगुणा 3 अण्णे, विसिव्वयाइं इमेसिं तु॥ ७२ ॥ .
- ७२. स्थूल प्राणीवध विरमण अर्थात् अहिंसा आदि मूल गुण रूपपाँच अणुव्रत और उत्तर गुण रूपशेष दिव्रत आदि तीन गुण व्रत एवं सामायिक आदि चार शिक्षा व्रत होते हैं।
72. There are five basic virtues in the form of the five minor vows including refraining from killing gross beings (ahimsa), etc.; and auxiliary virtues in the form of three guna vrat (dik-vrat or directional vows, etc.); and four shiksha vrat (samayik, etc.). [guna vrats are restraints that reinforce the practice of anuvrats and shiksha vrats are vows of spiritual discipline].
