Refined critics can be educated even by a mere indication of the direction. With their enlightened minds they will guess aright everywhere. Ananda contented himself with indicating the broad types of Dhvani-varieties. He says that innumerable varieties of Dhvani were possible;
It may be pointed out here that Abhinavagupta gives 9940 varieties whereas Mammața's figure is 10455. But when we see the preponderance of minute classification and subtle hairsplitting arguments in the Dhvanyāloka we may feel that Ananda has wasted his energy on matters insignificant in respect of literary criticism. But we must not forget that Ananda is an ancient writer living in an age when the whole atmosphere was permeated with a love for philosophical argument and logical subtlety.
Ananda refrains from illustrating the blemishes seen in the works of great poets. He feels that a loud exposure of the defects of great men who have the bright light of a thousand good sayings about them would amount to a censure of the critic himself;
Ananda's foremost aim was to establish the existence of the pratīyamāna sense. About the function which was required to convey that sense, opinions might differ-he himself has acknowledged this and on his part he thought vyañjanā or suggestion as the most logical and convenient way of revealing that sense : arach raucurata faini usaha ATUT: TG Curts - इत्यस्माभिरभ्युपगतम् । On the whole, the style of Ānanda is very similar to the style adopted in the research works of modern days.
Conclusion
The conclusion of Ananda recalls to the reader the claim made in the introduction and then, on the basis of the whole argument of the work, it reiterates in summary form the findings and this restatement highlights the soul of the argument in his work. Ananda in his conclusion says that the
