The facsimile is introduced on a reduced scale into Plate I. It is in excellent preservation, and the versification, in the Srigdhara measure complete throughout. At the head of the second and third lines only there are a couple of superfluous letters introduced, in the former fu and in the latter
i which I presume should be read together as siddha, 'accomplished' - or it may be the name of the sculptor. After transcription, my pandit KAMALÁ KÁNTA readily furnished me with the interpretation of this curious monument, which I accordingly annex in modern Devanágarīand translation:
Transcript in Modern Devanagari. यस्योयस्थानभूमि नृपतिशतशिरः पातवातावधूता गुप्तानां वन्शजस्य प्रविस्टतयशसस्तस्य सर्वोत्तमद्धेः राज्ये शक्रोपमस्य क्षितिपशतपतेः स्कन्दगुप्तस्य शान्तेः वर्षे त्रिन्शद्दशैकोत्तरकर्शततमे ज्येष्ठमासि प्रपन्ने ख्यातेस्मिन्यामरत्ने ककुभः रति जनैस्साधुसंसर्गपूते पुत्रो यस्सो मिलस्य प्रचुर गण निर्भट्टि सोमो महार्थः तत्सुनूरुद्रसोमः प्रथुलमति यशा व्याघ्रःरत्यन्यसंज्ञो मद्रस्तस्यात्मजो भूद्द्विजगुरुयतिषु प्रायशः प्रीतिमान्यः पुण्य स्कन्धं स चक्रे जंगदिदमखिलं संसरद्वीक्ष्य भीतो श्रेयोत्थं भूतभूत्यै पथि नियमवतामर्हतामादिकर्तृण्
पञ्चेन्द्रां स्थपयित्वा धरणि धरमयान्सन्निखातस्ततोयाण् ।। .. शैलस्तम्भः सुचारुगिरिवरशिखरायोपमः कीर्ति कर्ता*
*The following errors of orthography are noted by the pandit : applying before stand in the second fourth lines. The insertion of visarga in ककुभःरति and व्याघ्रःरति भीतो for भीतः in the ninth line : the final of the tenth and eleventh lines, which sould both be नः and खात स्ततोयां in the 10th which should be खातस्थतोयां.
