But I am sorry to miss in your programme any provision for research work in your history and sacred books. The history and tenets of your creed are hardly known to non-Jains beyond the narrow circle of a few oriental scholars. It was believed for centuries by all outsiders that Jainism was an offshoot of Bud. dhism and its study was neglected on account of this belief. And who dispelled this misunderstanding ? Not the members of your community. A German scholar was required to announce to the world that Jainism was independent of Buddhism and was able to prove that your 23rd Tirthankara was not a mythological personage and that he lived as early as 700 B. C. I do not hereby mean to say that there are not learned men among you. I know full well that there are a good many who are well-versed in all the details of your abstruse philosophy and subtle intricacies of logic. But the critical and historical faculty and a wide acquiantance with the progress of science and modern thought is apt to be sadly wanting in all our priests and people. The age of blind belind belief is gone; and the world is not going to believe in anything on mere authority, however old it may be. You shall have have to establish by the concrete evidence of Science and sound reasoning that your religion antedates the Vedas, if it is to be accepted by the world of scholar-ship.
પરંતુ તમારા કાર્યક્રમમાં તમારા ઈતિહાસ અને તમારા પવિત્ર સૂત્ર (Sacred Books) ની શોધ ખોળ માટે કાંઈ જોગવાઈ નથી રાખવામાં આવી એ જોઈ મને ખેદ થાય છે. થોડાક પાશ્ચાત્ય વિદ્વાનોની એક નાનકડી મંડળી શિવાય, અન્ય જનેતરોને ત. મારી જાતિના ઇતિહાસ અને સિદ્ધાંત ભાગ્યેજ જાણવામાં છે. ઘણા સૈકાઓ થયાં બહારનાં બધાં લકે એમ માનતાં હતાં કે, જૈન ધર્મ એ બોદ્ધ ધર્મની એક શાખા છે. અને આવી માનીતા સિવાય બીજા કોઈપણ કારણથી તેના (જૈનધર્મનો) અભ્યાસ તરફ બેદરકારી બતાવવામાં નહોતી આવી. અને આવી ગેરસમજુતી કેણે દૂર કરી ? તમારી કેમના સો એ નહી! શ્રદ્ધધર્મથી જૈનધર્મ એક જુદો અને સ્વતંત્રધર્મ છે એવું જગત સન્મુખ જાહેર કરવાને એક જર્મન વિદ્વાનની જરૂર પડી. અને તે (જર્મન - લર મી. જેકેબી ) એમ સાબીત કરવાને શક્તિવાન થયો કે, તમારા ૨૩મા તીર્થંકર એક દંતકથા રૂપ વર્ણવેલા પુરૂષ નહોતા, પરંતુ તેઓ ઇ. સ. ની પૂર્વે ૭૦૦ વર્ષે એક વિદ્યમાનતા ધરાવનાર પુરૂષ હતા. આ ઉપરથી હું એમ કહેવા માંગતો નથી કે, તમારામાં વિદ્વાન પુરૂષો નથી. હું જાણું છું કે તમારા ગુઢ તત્ત્વજ્ઞાનની અને ન્યાયની ગુંચવણ ભરી બારીકીઓની દરેક હકીકત જાણનારા ઘણું પુરૂષ છે; પણ આપણે બધાં ધર્મ ગુરૂઓમાં
