________________ श्री राष्ट्रसंत शिरोमणि अभिनंदन थ for their cremation was a wealthy Jain trader. At that time no one was willing to give a patch of land for this purpose until one Chaudhary Atta agreed to sell a plot on the stipulation that Todar Mal could buy as much space as he could cover with gold coins. Todar Mal produced the coins and bought the land. However, no memorial was raised at this place until has conquest of Sirhind by Banda Singh Bahadur in 1710 and later by Dal Khalsa in 1764. In fact, the credit for searching and locating the exact place goes to Maharaj Karam Singh (1798-1845) of Patiala, and it was goddess Chakreshavari, as says a Jain tradition, who helped the Maharaja in this venture. It is said that the efforts of officials sent out by the Maharaja to locate this place were in vain until goddess Chakreshavari came to one such official in a dream this official or soldier lay down in the precincts of this temple exhausted by his long searching forays in the area. In the dream she told him to go to his Maharaja and ask him to let his white horse loose. The horse will run to the sacred place, but instead of treading on it, it will run around it. The Maharaja, it is said, did the goddess' bidding. The urn containing the ashes was also discovered from the place thus located, and a gurdwara built there in 1843. An elegant gateway on the roadside, several rooms to lodge the pilgrims and the visiting Jain monks and nuns, and a dispensary have recently been added to the temple. An annual fair, largely attended by Jain ascetics and house holders from different parts of northern India, is held here on the last three days of the light half of the month of Savan (July-August). Mundan, naming and such other auspicious ceremonies are held on the concluding full moon day.
