________________ 72 2. The term FELTER: does not help us much in deciding the authorship. The plural form can be used out of respect for the author. At the same time it is very likely that ancient authors might have composed sūtrās and Haribhadrasūri might have put them together. (?) w. gs. al. 379iah od ; The Pañcasūtra which is a small elegant treatise written by some old writer whose name has still remained unknown. (3) W. SŤ. T. They are a literary heirloom preserved in the memory of jain monks." The language of the known Prakrit works of Haribhadra is Jaina MaharasTri whereas the present work is written in Ardhamāgadhi prose; and this prose shares quite a few pecularities of the diction and style of the canonical works. This fact suggests that Acāryā Haribhadra was possible not its author. It is not unlikely that the author of Pañcasūtra regarded the contents of the text as the property of the entire Jaina Samgha and preffered to remain anonymous. It is also suggestive of its early date of composition. How early it is diffcult to say. Since Haribhadra does not know who its author was. We may not be far wrong in saying that it was composed about a century or so before Acāryā Haribhadra flourished. उपरना चार अभिप्रायोनो सार ए छे के आ चारेय विद्वानो, पञ्चसूत्रना कर्ता आ.हरिभद्रसूरिजी नथी ए बाबतमां स्पष्ट छे अने एक मत धरावे छे. तो मुनि श्रीजंबूविजयजी पञ्चसूत्र ना कर्ता तरीके आ.हरिभद्रसूरिजी संभवित Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
