________________ balcony (or portico of his palace.) In Jain canonical text occurs a word variously spelt (on the basis of various manuscripts of the texts) as बालग्गपोइआ, वालगपोइआ, वालग्गपोतिका, वालग्गपोत्तिका. Its occurences are noted in the Desisabdakosa from the Urtaradhyana-cūrṇi, Urtaradhyayana comentary of Śantyācaryā, Āvaśyaka-cūrṇi and Suryaprajñapti commentary. Three different meanings are given : (१) शकुनी - गृह, (२) वलभी, अट्टालिका, (३) आकाश-तडाग - मध्यस्थितं क्रीडास्थानं लघु-प्रासादम्. It can be बालग्गपोइआ / पोतिका easily seen that the first two of these meanings of are the same as that of the बालग्ग - कवोदिआ occurring in the Mṛcchakatika. The third meaning is based on the second constituent बालग्ग पोत्तिका, viz. पोतिका 'asmall boat. Hence of the compound the interpretation a small pleasure house in the midst of a lake possibly anthetop (अग्र) of a boat under the opan sky - (आकाश). ' Looking to the context of the passage cited from the पोइआ / पोतिका of the Jain texts is a बालाग्र कपोतिका / बालग्गपोतिका Mṛcchakatika its seems that the 86 result of some textual confusion the word बालग्गकवोतिआ bing unfamiliar became comupted as and the interpreters were forced to accomodate the known meaning of पोत. बालग्ग / वालुग्ग = मत्तवारण, वलभी, of whatever origin, seems to be reliable. It must have been a familiar structure about the fourth-fifth cartury. (६) हेलि, प्रत्युषाण्ड 'सूर्य' Jain Education International १.
