JCA was one of the first Jain organizations established in North America to promote Jain principles and practice, and provide a sacred place for worship. In 1981, a residential building in Elmhurst, NY was purchased to serve as a temple for the Jain community. For the past 20 years, this place housed the Idols of Shri Mahavirswami and other Tirthankars and hosted many Jain scholars and celebrated various ceremonies of Jain religion. In 2000, planning to reconstruct the temple began in earnest. The old building was demolished and Bhoomi Poojan was performed on March 30, 2002 and Shilaropan took place on July 12, 2002. Within five years of planning and construction, the building was completed in 2005. The Pratistha ceremonies were performed between June 10 to 19, 2005. Shri Ashtapad Mountain carved out of crystal stones weighing 7.5 ton was installed at JCA Temple on June 21, 2009 with due religious ceremonies. Adhar Abhishek of 24 Tirthankar idols carved out of various colored Gemstones was performed at Mumbai on April 25, 2009 under the banner of JCA. These idols were imported and Adhar Abhishek of the idols followed by Installation and Pratishtha ceremony was performed on June 19, 2010. The architectural design and planning of this divine place stays true to the multiple codes and ethics of the Jain Religion and satisfies the need for place of worship for Jain Community. In this temple, religion and architecture come together to create a space that is sacred in every detail, while adhering to civic regulations. Various aspects of Jain beliefs are displayed through sculpture, artwork, paintings and narratives throughout the building. This will evoke a greater spiritual consciousness and awareness amongst all. This Jain Center aims to absorb the mind, body and soul of every one that comes to its doorstep. Classes were organized to teach Jain religion to young children through Pathshala. During the Paryushana there were many Tapascharyas like Atthal, Mas-khaman, Ayambil al Varsi Tap and Parna where whole Sangh was invited The center set a trend by inviting spiritual leaders and scholars for Paryushana Parva and for summer lectures. To accommodate the ever growing crowd, center started using auditoriums of schools. The center also hosted an International JAINA Conference on April 20. 1975 and the 2nd JAINA Convention from May 28-30, 1983, during which JAINA adopted its constitution. The Jain Center of America - New York revised its original constitution and approved it at the general body meeting, an November 22, 1992 which was amended and adopted on September 30, 2001, to accommodate the needs and desires of the members and to have a bet ter understanding and management In the year 1999, it was decided to build a new temple at Ithaca Street. The existing Pratimas from the temple were moved to a devotee's residence and then to 45-22 74th Street, Elmhurst, NY - the new property purchased by JCA. The building at Ithaca Street was demolished in 2001. Bhoomi Poojan and Shilaropan ceremonies for the new temple building were performed on March 30, 2002 and July 12, 2002 respectively. After Shilaropan, construction of the building started which was completed by 2004 The building was handed over by members of the Diamond and Colorstone Community to JCA on November 28, 2004 in a formal "Key Handover Ceremony" in presence of the Jain Community The Pratishtha ceremonies were performed in June 2005. During the next five years remaining construction work, finishing, furnishing and art work were completed. Ashtapad mountain carved from crystal was installed in June 2009 and Pratishtha ceremony of 24 Tirthankar carved from gemstones was performed in June 2010. Particular themes-linked closely to the philosophy of Jainismare poignantly viewed, through painting, sculpture or narrative remarks, on the empty walls throughout the building Since temples/ upashraya are meant to stir the inner soul of each devotee, this idea of decorating the walls with lain themes evokes a greater spirituality consciousness and awareness for all this Jain Center aims to absorb the mind, soul and body of every worshipper that comes to its doorstep. We have abided by civic regulations and spiritual guidance in constructing this center for Jains. The temple complex will nurture the needs of this generation as well as future generations. It will serve as a center of religious ac tives, rituals and a place for learning Jain religion and philosophy for our youngsters-for centuries to come. It is only in the realization of this that our liberation lies. Bhagwan Mahavir said, "Arouse the God in yourself". The world is turning over a new leaf Because today we see our religion more clearly than ever before, it is time to turn our thoughts into action. Awakening Your Inner Vision There are two ways of comprehending truth-through reason and through intuition. Reason sees the form and intuition the essence. Finding Peace and Joy Happiness is a habit, and peace is the effect of cultivating it. Page #178 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Quotations - 2 - Meditation Meditation Like all subjective experience meditation can't be described in words or expressed in any other way. The experience is the definition. Meditation All one can say is that meditation awakens the higher mind, where super conscious activity takes place. This is the source of intuition, inspiration, bliss and transcendental experience. The Power of Contemplation Stronger than the body is the mind and stronger than the mind is the conscious. Its power has no limits. Page #179 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Quotations - 3 - Human Relations Human Relations Our fellowmen are our source as well as the test of our strength. Man comes alone, goes alone. Alone he attracts and assimilates the effect of Karma and suffers it's consequences. To live within oneself and yet live practically and in peaceful coexistence with the community is the ideal to strive for. To bring about peace in family, we must observe the six virtues of discipline, adjustment, compromise, tolerance, humility and love. Page #180 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Quotations - 4 - Discipline Oh! Enlightened Soul (Jeev) Shun your Pride and Ego Oh! Enlightened Soul (Jeev) Do you live for wealth or is wealth just a means for Living? Mental Health Much impurity is present in our thoughts and emotions. The first stage to gain mental health is to flush out the accumulated sins. Discipline - the practice of tolerance is a key to success in life. Discipline: Restraint, regulation, order, are all essential to achieve any desired goal, including happiness. Page #181 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Self-control is not self-denialit means you must be the master of the pleasures of the world, not a slave. Penance Penance is not a self-punishment but a Quotations -5- Scriptures necessary exercise for spiritual growth. Self-Restraint When man has no control over the sense organs, he becomes a slave to them. Non-Violence Non-violence does not just mean refraining from physical harm. It also includes desisting from aggressive thoughts and inflicting mental hurt upon all beings. This pluralistic principle encourages understanding and respect for the views of the other, leading to universal brotherhood and peaceful co-existence. Page #187 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Common Misconceptions Jainism is a religion of restrictions, don't do this, don't eat that Jainism is a religion of freedom. Freedom from attachment, aversions, desires and fears, freedom from the pain and suffering, birth and death. Jainism is about an approach to ultimate freedom by setting one's own limits. Jain Way of Life is hard to practice in North America With a constitutional right to practice any religion of your choice. North America provides a great opportunity to practice and propogate a Jain Way of Life. In fact, the core practices of Jainism, respecting and honoring everyone, vegetarian/Vegan lifestyle, environmentalism, pluralistic thinking, yoga, meditation and spiritual practices are not only accepted but are also fashionable these days. Jainism is a religion of the weak It is the religion of the brave who conquers their inner enemies like anger, ego, deceit and greed. In fact, mahavir literally means the great-brave. Practicing non-violence, non-absolutism and non-possessiveness in daily life builds character and inner strength. Jainism is an offshoot of Hinduism "Jainism is and always has been an independant religion" - Jacobi. It has co-existed with a multitude of other religions since Indus Valley civilization, being both influenced by and influencing them. Mahavir was the founder of Jainism Although Mahavir reformed and re-established the Jain order in 6th century BC. Jainism existed long before him. In fact, he was the 24th and last Tirthankar of the current time period. The Advent and Disappearance of Envy A dying cow dropped dead in front of a Jain temple. The Brahmins carried on an agitation against the Jains whom they defamed as slaughterers of cow. Gurudeva revived life in the cow by his power of self-control, and the cow got up and died in front of their own temple and so they craved for pardon then. The original design of Ashtapad was four sided also called as Sarvatomukhi - Omni-directional. Space constraint forced us to make a unidirectional unit viewable only from the front. Now an architectural blueprint was developed to a scale based on the available space. Height and width of the mountain (Ht 12.7" x W 14.6" x D 5.1") were determined according to the space available in the conservatory. 5.2 Structural and Engineering Consideration: Once a decision was made to use crystal for the making of the mountain, the weight of the material and frame, which is about 10 tons-became a structural challenge. Overriding constraint was the weight bearing capacity of the temple on the 4th floor. Permissible weight was not to exceed 10 tons. A steel frame weighing one and a half ton was designed in Jaipur to hold the whole structure. There are eight layers of crystal blocks one above the other resting on a steel frame. As this is a mountain the slope was taken into consideration. The whole structure has 5.1' depth at the bottom but only 0.75' depth at the top. Proposed Design 5.3 Crystal & Gemstones The rough crystal stone weighing 30 tons was Imported. After processing and carving the final weight of the mountain is 7.5 tons. This is supported on a 1.5 ton steel frame. Various colored gemstone were imported from all over the world and used to carve idols of different sizes. Each idol is a single piece which is carved from a single piece of gemstone as found in nature. All stones are certified by the Gemological Lab. There are no joints and each stone is carved as per religious rules and measurements. We have tried to use the best quality gemstones. These idols will form the part of the final unit. Some of the stone names are Tiger Eye, Rhodocrosite, Ruby, Amethyst, Tourmaline, Rose Quartz, Sodalite etc. Rough Crystal Cryst 6.1 Ashtapad Mountain The mountain is the main body and is made of crystal quartz. Various blocks of crystal (59) each weighing 50 to 350 kilo, were assembled to provide a sloping pattern on the front and sides in order to replicate the appearance of a real mountain. Eight steps are constructed in the center leading to the first row of the Gokhala. 24 Gokhalas are sculpted in the mountain itself where the idols are installed. The structure of the mountain consists of eight layers of crystal blocks. The first two layers are for steps, next four are for idols and last two layers are for Shikhar. A five Shikhar design has been added at the top to give the whole structure, the appearance of a temple. All Shikhars are carved as per the design in the scripture, and will be adorned with gold Kalash and Dhwaja (flag) at the top. Ashtapad Mountain Dimension 127 9 14'6" 5'1" 5X18" X 26" 23" Height at Center Height on Sides Width Depth Size of the Steps Distance from Glass We have created an effect of a snow-capped mountain by using appropriate measures. Mount Kailash and Mansarovar photos are mounted on the back wall. The ceiling and the wall at the back is painted with faux painting depicting the sky. 6.2 Gokhalas (Niches) There are 24 Gokhalas of varying sizes to house 24 idols. All gokhalas of each row are equal in size. Originally gokhalas were carved separately as an individual unit. But later on it was decided to carve it in the mountain itself, so that it becomes a part of the mountain. All the gokhalas have a base with two pillars in the front, a niche for idol, an arch, a chhajja, and a shikhar at the top. A design with regular carving was done in the beginning but later on a Ashta-Pratiharya design was added and hence all 24 Gokhalas have this design. Individual Yaksh Yakshini are carved at the base next to the Sinhasan. Five-Shikhar Design 6.3 Idols of 24 Tirthankars- Shri Chovisi The 24 Idols are carved to represent the 24 Tirthankars. Each one has its own symbol at the base that identifies the idol to a viewer. All idols are carved out of gemstones. Due to limitations of the available gemstones, the color will not confirm to the original colors of each Tirthankar. Idols will be installed as per their position according to religious rules as discussed earlier. Ashta-Pratiharya Carving Amethyst Smoky Quartz Sizes of idols vary according to the level where they are being installed based upon sitting arrangement- the lowest two are the tallest 11" in Ht (Idols 1 and 2), then upper four are 9" in Ht (Idols 3 to 6) then middle eight are 7" in Ht (Idols 7 to 14) and finally lower ten are 5" in Ht (Idols 15 to 24), which are the smallest. These match proportionately to the height of each Tirthankar as per scripture. 2 Gokhala & Idol Dimensions: Level Size Tot HW Tirthankars Idols HWD 1-Lowest Ex Large 2 2-Lower Small 10 3-Middle Medium 8 4-Upper Large 4 10 5 4 2 8 75 3 4 974 24 22 1 to 2 14 12 15 to 24 18" 15" 7 to 14 22 18 3 to 6 Page #254 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Janma Kalyanak Naag Kumar & Sagar's Sons Ashtapad Related Stories 1. He replied affirmatively and said that his son Marichi will become the 24th Tirthankar after many life cycles and will be known as Mahavir. He subsequently explained the upcoming Chovisi (24 Tirthankars). This is how King Bharat came to know the details about the present Chovisi. Page #292 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Bharat Chakravarti Chakravarti King Bharat (son of Shri Rishabhadev) had built a palace of crystal and installed 24 idols of Shri Tirthankars carved out of gemstones at this place as a memorial to commemorate the nirvana of Bhagawan Shri Rishabhadev. The name "Ashtapad" is derived from the fact that there are eight (Ashta) steps (Pad) leading to the palace. Bharat was the eldest son of Rishabhadev. After his father renounced the throne, Bharat became the King. When King Bharat heard about Rishabhadev Bhagawan's nirvana, he went to Ashtapad to pay homage. There, Bharat not only constructed a gemstone-studded palace, but also installed the idols of the 24 Tirthankaras as Rishabhadev had described in his sermon. Page #293 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Areesha Mahal Story King Bharat was looking in the mirror in his palace. When one of the rings fell off of his finger, King Bharat saw his bare finger and wondered what he would look like without any ornamentation. With his newfound awareness, King Bharat entered deep thought, where he was able to destroy all his Ghati Karma & reach Keval-Jnan. As all the Tapas were fasting for 3 days, Gautam Swami arranged Kheer (rice cooked in milk) for Parna. Even though the quantity of Kheer was not enough, due to his spiritual power he could feed Kheer to all of them by putting his thumb in the vessel. Nag Kumar Dev was very angry, but when the Princes apologized to Nag Kumar he pardoned them & went away. The princes thought the trench will be filled up over the period, so they decided to fill it up with holy water from the Ganges & disturbed Nag Kumar Dev again, so he came out & burned all 60,000 princes to ashes. Al 24 Tirthankar attained Nirvana at five places (Five Maha Tirth). The first Tirthankar, Bhagwan Shri Rushabhdev, attained Nirvana on Ashtapad Mountain There are five central event (known as Panch Kalyanak) that occurs in a Tirthankar lifetime: Chyavan Kalyanak, Janma Kalyanak, Diksha Kalyanak, KevalGnan Kalyanak and Nirvana Kalyanak, when the soul gets free from all karmic bonds and is liber ated to attain Siddha status. Chakravarti King Bharat had built a palace of crystal and installed 24 dols of all Tirthankar carved out of gemstones to commemorate the Nirvana af Bhagwan Shri Rushabhdev. The name "Ashtapad" is derived from the fact that there are eight (Ashta) steps (Pad) leading to the palace. Details about Ashtapad Maha Tirth After attaining absolute knowledge, Shri Rushabhdev Bhagwan was delivering a sermon when King Bharat asked if anyone present here would become a Tirthankar. He replied affirmative ty and said that his son Marichi will become the 24 Tirthankar and will be known as Mahavir. He subsequently explained the details of the upcoming Chovisi. New York, constructed a new building for its temple and other religious activities. As a tribute to 24 Tirthankar, it is customary to make idols of 24 Tirthankar in a temple and place them around Gabhara (main place of worship in a temple) Then one happened to visit a temple in Jaipur (India) and saw an Ashtapad Pat This was the turning point from the "Ratna Mandir concept into "Ashtapad" Now how to morph Ratna Mandir into "Shri Ashtapad"? This led us to research further in the study of Ashtapad. Courtesy: Sh Nathmal Chandalia, Jaipur Front ElevationJCA Temple building Shri Ashtapad Tirth Pat carved on Glass with Silver at Ahmedabad depicted the details about Ashtapad and related stories Courtesy: Shrimad Rajchandra Tradition As the space was limited, we did not know how to achieve this? Meanwhile, we saw couple of idols carved from gemstones in the office and thought of making 24 idols out of gemstones and house them in Bhamati area as Ratna Mandir (RM). This would require much smaller space. At this stage a preliminary design of the Ratna Mandir was drawn A mountain is carved out of crystal stones. There are eight steps at the base as per name of Ashtapad (8 steps) and 24 niches (Gokhalas) for Shri Chovisi in the center of the mountain. There are five Shikhar and has various stories carved from gemstones 2-Blue 2-Green 2-White 2-Red 16-Gold Courtesy: Shrenuj & Company, Mumbai "Desire, like the sky, is endless." -Uttaradhyayan Sutra, 9-48 Framing Design Development of Ashtapad Design The original design of Ashtapad was four sided as per the picture given, also known as Sarvatomukhi or Omni-directional. (Reference - Gnan Prakash Deeparnave). The weight of the crystal, which is about 7.5 ton became a structural challenge. A steel frame weighing one ton was designed to hold the whole structure. There are eight layers one above the other in the steel framing. As this is a mountain, the slope was taken into consideration. The whole structure has 5.1' depth at the bottom but only 0.75' at the top The sitting arrangement of idols in 4 d fferent rows as shown in the picture was done as per the following verse (Shloka) from scripture; castAri ahadasaToyabaMdiyA jigavarAghavIsa, parama-niDiadA sidhyA sidhi mama disaMtu -sidhyANa budhyANaM sUtra This verse indicates that the four Tirthankar are facing south or sitting at upper level (numbers 3 to 6), eight facing west or at the middle level (numbers 7 to 14), ten facing north or at the lower level (numbers 15 to 24), and two facing east or at the lowest level (number 1 and 2). This way the idol positions were determined for a unidirectional unit in four horizontal rows, one above the other. Space constraint forced us to make a unidirectional unit viewable only from the front. Then an architectural blueprint was developed to a scale based on the available space. Accordingly height and width of the mountain (Ht 13.1" x W 14.7" x D 5.1") were determined. A sky light was also installed at the top to give an effect of the Ashtapad Mountain being open to the sky. Furthermore, we added a faux painting on the sides giving the effect similar to sky with paintings of Kailash and Mansarovar in the background which gives the impression that Ashtapad is in the Kailash area and open to the sky. 3 engineers, 2 architects, and many Ashtaped team members took part in final designing of the frame. It took almost three years to come to a final framing design, Page #304 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Model Making- A 10 Year Story Model #: 1 Year: 2001 Size: 1' x 1' Carved from: Serpentine Stories carved on sides A 2-D Model Brought to N.Y on April 2001 Exhibited at JCA Model #: 3 Year: 2002 Size: 3' x 3' Carved from: Serpentine Story carvings done in 3-D Installed at 74th Street Temple Model #: 5 Year: 2003 Size: 3' x 3' Carved from: Crystal 1 Crystal Model Installed at Ithaca St. Temple "Where there is gain, there is greed; greed grows as one gains more." Crystal Blocks Total of 59 blocks were cut and arranged in 8 layers to make the mountain. Each weighing few kg to about 300 kg individually. Carving on Steps - Eight steps were carved at base of the mountain in the center, heading up to Gokhale level. Carving on Ghummat and Chhaja All 24 Gokhala have Ghummat with Chhaja and were fully carved, all around. Making of Mountain, Steps and Ghokhala Mountain is the main body and is made from crystal quartz. Various blocks of crystal (59) each weighing few kg to 300 kg, were assembled to replicate the appearance of a real mountain and to provide a sloping pattern on the front and sides. Eight steps were constructed in the center leading to the first row of the Gokhala. 24 Gokhala were sculpted in the mountain itself where the idols are installed. Model No. 5 was built in crystal to 1/5th size of the final unit. The mountain is constructed from crystal blocks, arranged in eight layers one above the other and side by side. The mountain is carved in eight layers of crystal blocks. First two layers are for steps, next four layers are for idols and last two layers are for Shikhar. Eight steps are carved at the base of the mountain in the center. A design with regular carving was done in the beginning but later on a Asht Pratiharya design was added and hence all 24 Gokhala have a Ashta Pratiharya design. Individual Yaksh Yakshini are carved at the base next to the Sinhasan. A five Shikhar design is carved as per the design in the scripture to give an appearance of a temple and adorned with gold Kalash and at Dhwaja (flag) at the top. Mountain & Shri Chovisi are illuminated from the front using white lights, as well as from the back using color lights, giving an amazing effect. Shri Padlipta Suri's Visit to Ashtapad. *On the mountain and others are in front of the mountain "Past Karmas will definitely catch you in the future." Janma Kalyanak During the third era, King Nabhiraj and Mata Marudevi ruled over Bharat Kshetra. The Queen gave birth to a son named Rushabha who later became King, ruling well and teaching various skills to his people. As his life went by, he decided to renounce worldly life. He donated all his possessions for one year and became a monk. Varsi Tap Parna As a monk, Rushabhdev reached the city of Hastinapur, King Shreyans Kumar bowed down and offered him fresh sugarcane juice for Parna. Since then the Varsi Tap (penance) and the corresponding fast breaking ceremony of drinking sugarcane Juice during Parna have been followed. Bharat Chakravarti Bharat was the eldest son of Rushabhdev. After his father renounced the throne, hel became the King. When King Bharat heard about Bhagwan's Nirvana, he went to Ashtapad to pay homage. There he constructed a crystal palace and installed the idols of the 24 Tirthankar as Rushabhdev had explained him in one of his sermon. Areesa Mahal Once King Bharat was looking in the mirror in his palace, when one of the rings fell off from his finger. He saw his bare finger and wondered what he would look like without any ornaments. He realized his material possessions were creating the illusion of beauty & that true beauty comes from with-1 in. He entered in deep meditation, when he was able to destroy all his Ghati Karma. Shri Gautam Swami Bhagwan Mahavir once said in his sermon, "A person who scales Ashtapad offers prayers to 24 Tirthankar attains Moksha in the same life." When Gautam Swami heard this, he requested permission from Bhagwan to go to Ashtapad. With the help of spiritual power (Atma Labdhi), Gautam Swami scaled Ashtapad Mountain by holding onto sunrays as rope. Tapas Kheer Parna When Gautam Swami arrived at the base of the Ashtapad Mountain, he saw three ascetics, with 500 disciples each trying to scale Ashtapad, but they could not climb more than 3 steps. Upon his return all Tapas were impressed by his achievement and wanted to be his disciples. Since the Tapas were fasting for 3 days, Gautam Swami arranged Kheer (rice cooked in milk) for Parna. The quantity of Kheer was not enough, but with his spiritual power he fed all by putting his thumb in the vessel. Tiryank Jrumbhak Dev That night a heavenly god named Vaishraman (Tiryank Jrumbhak Dev, in one of the previous life of Vajra Swami) came there to worship. He saw Gautam Swamil who looked very healthy. He thought how can this monk do penance. Gautam Swami read his mind and told the story of Pundarik and Kandarik, that control of soul through meritorious meditation is real penance. This way he cleared the doubt of heavenly god. -Sutra-krutanga Sutra 1.5.2.33 Nag Kumar & Sagar's sons King Sagar's 60,000 sons went to Ashtapad to pray. In order to protect the temple, they dug a trench all around. Being disturbed, Nag Kumar Dev got angry but Princes apologized. Then they filled the trench with water. This disturbed Nag Kumar Dev again, so he came out and burned all 60,000 Princes to ashes. Ravan & Bali Muni While flying over Ashtapad, Ravan's Vimant stopped as he failed to pray to meditating Bali Muni. This angered Ravan and remembering his previous revenge, he tried to lift the mountain with intention to throw it into the ocean. With special knowledge, Bali realized this so he pressed his toe on mountain. Ravan was unable to bear the pressure, so he begged for pardon. Ravan & Mandodari Bhakti Ravan and his wife Mandodari went to Ashtapad to pray. While Ravan was playing Veena, Mandodari started dancing when a string from Veena broke. Ravan pulled a vein from his thigh, to replace the broken string, and continued playing. Then they performed pooja. Thus Ravan earned Tirthankar Nam-karma. Rani Veermati Rani Veermati wanted to visit Ashtapad to pray. After she completed a long penance, Shashan Devi, assisted her to Ashtapad. She prayed to all 24 Tirthankar and placed a gemstone Tilak on their forehead. In her later life, as Rani Damayanti, her forehead glowed like ruby Tilak that she had previously adorned on all Tirthankar. Three research trips were organized by JCA to visit and research the Kailash Mansarovar area from 2006 to 2009 The main objectives of this excursion were to: 1. Add depth and breadth to the research already conducted, 2. Find the location/existence of Ashtapad as described in scripture 3.Prove the existence of Ashtapad geographically and archaeologically In recent history, no one has witnessed the actual Ashtapad Tirth as described in the scriptures, Pilgrims and visitors travel to the mountain where this Tirth is believed to be hidden somewhere. Many individuals and organizations are involved in research to unravel the mysteries of this legendry place. Kailash, area of the Ashtapad Mountain up in the Himalayas. Kailash Mountain is also known as KANG RIM POCHE' which is 25 miles north of Mansarovar. Between Mansarovar (Padma Had) and Kailash about 5-7 miles NE, is another mountain called Ashtapad. This mountain is 8 miles in height as per scriptures and is covered with white snow and hence known as 'Dhawalgini One can walk from "Darchin" after crossing about 1520 mountain hills, and can reach there in 4 to 6 hours. Buddhist pilgrims call this mountain "Kang Members of First Research Trip to Kailash Mansarovar 2006 Nandi Parvat: Shri Bharatbhal Hansraj Shah thinks this could be Ashtapad. Nothing in the Universe has permanence even though the whole Universe is constant. Spiritual values are worth striving for as they offer ultimate freedom. Sansaar BhavanaNo permanent relationship in universe. The soul transmigrates from one life to another in four Gatis-human, animal, hellish, and heavenly. The soul must achieve ultimate freedom from it. Anyatva Bhavana-Separateness One's own soul is separate from any other. At the time of death, soul leaves the physical body behind. The soul therefore should not develop attachments to worldly objects. NEVITABILITY OF THIS DEATH azIca bhAvanA Asharan Bhavana - No one provides protection. The soul is own refuge and to achieve enlightenment one should take refuge to five best, Arihanta, Siddha, Aacharya, Upadhyaya and Sadhus. Ekatva Bhavna-Solitude of the soul. The soul is solitaire and lonely in existence. It assumes birth alone, and departs alone. It is responsible for its own karmas- good or bad. Ashuchi Bhavana Impureness of the body. The composition of the body reveals that it is impure, only soul is pure. The body will become non existent, but the soul is eternal. Emotional attachment to the body is needless.
