Symbols Used in Temple Architecture

The wheel of religion or law is placed in the center and flanked by a deer on either side. The deer symbolizes truth
and compassion. The monk and nun show their reverence to the dharma chakra. The wheel represents the dynamism of peaceful
change in an environment of harmonious co-existence.
Makarmukh These creatures are found on the threshold of the
main entrance and the devotee steps on it when entering. They are believed to represent the destructive
elements of attachment and aversion.
Kurma Shilä (slab of stone) When a temple is being built, the devotees perform a foundation laying ceremony called Shiläropan with a slab of stone. The slab bas nine squares with different
figures of mostly ocean creatures.
