Jain Center of America (JCA) - New York was founded in 1966 and registered as nonprofit Religious Corporation in 1970 in the State of New York. JCA was one of the first Jain organizations established in North America to promote Jain principles and practice, and provide a sacred place for worship.
In 1981, a residential building in Elmhurst, NY was purchased to serve as a temple for the Jain community. For the past 20 years, this place housed the Idols of Shri Mahavirswami and other Tirthankars and hosted many Jain scholars and celebrated various ceremonies of Jain religion. In 2000, planning to reconstruct the temple began in earnest. The old building was demolished and Bhoomi Poojan was performed on March 30, 2002 and Shilaropan took place on July 12, 2002. Within five years of planning and construction, the building was completed in 2005. The Pratistha ceremonies were performed between June 10 to 19, 2005.
Shri Ashtapad Mountain carved out of crystal stones weighing 7.5 ton was installed at JCA Temple on June 21, 2009 with due religious ceremonies. Adhar Abhishek of 24 Tirthankar idols carved out of various colored Gemstones was performed at Mumbai on April 25, 2009 under the banner of JCA. These idols were imported and Adhar Abhishek of the idols followed by Installation and Pratishtha ceremony was performed on June 19, 2010.
The architectural design and planning of this divine place stays true to the multiple codes and ethics of the Jain Religion and satisfies the need for place of worship for Jain Community. In this temple, religion and architecture come together to create a space that is sacred in every detail, while adhering to civic regulations.
Various aspects of Jain beliefs are displayed through sculpture, artwork, paintings and narratives throughout the building. This will evoke a greater spiritual consciousness and awareness amongst all. This Jain Center aims to absorb the mind, body and soul of every one that comes to its doorstep.
