________________ NYAYA THE SCIENCE OF THOUGHT. CHAPTER I. The word Nyaya generally means a path or way, but in connection with philosophy it implies the method of accurate thinking, hence, the system of Logic, or, in general terms, the Science of Thought, which aims at the acquisition of right knowledge or truth. Right knowledge may be defined as that which is destructive of ignorance, the chief cause of mishaps. There are three kinds of ignorance, namely, (1) sanşaya (doubt), (2) viparyaya (wrong knowledge) and (3) anadhyavasaya (absence of knowledge). Doubt is the state of uncertainty about the correctness of two or more possible views of a fact. Viparyaya signifies knowledge which is untrue, Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
