મહાક્ષત્રપ રાજા રૂદ્રદામા. '. હવે પિટર્સનને તળાવના સમારકામ સંબંધી રો મત છે તે જોઈએ. અવ્વલમાં તો પિટર્સનને સ્વતંત્ર કોઈ મતજ તેમણે રજુ કર્યો નથી છતાં તેમાં તળાવના સમરાવનારા બંધાવનારા તરીકે સ્પષ્ટ શબ્દોમાં ચંદ્રગુપ્ત, અશોક અને રૂદ્રદામાને જ બતાવ્યા છે. છતાં લેખક બીજું નામ તેમાં ક્યાંથી ઉપજાવી કે શોધી શક્યા છે કે તેવી મતલબને ભાવાર્થ કયાંથી કાઢ્યો છે તે જણાવ્યું નથી. એપિગ્રાફીઆના લેખકથી જુદુ શા માટે પડવું થાય છે તેનું પણ કશુ વજૂદવાળુ સત્ય પ્રમાણ બતાવ્યું નથી.
વળી શિલાલેખ પ્રશસ્તિમાં પ્રિયદશીનું નામ નથી, નિશાન નથી. એટલે પિટર્સનને તેની કલ્પના કરવાનું કશું કારણ નથી. ડૉક્ટર મહાશયને તેનું નામ શોધી કાઢવાનું કે ઉપજાવી કાઢવાનું મન કેમ થઈ આવ્યું તે કળવું મુશ્કેલ નથી. પરંતુ આધાર વગર ઈતિહાસમાં કોઈ વસ્તુ ઉપજાવી શકાય નહીં
વળી પ્રિયદર્શી અને રૂદ્રદામાના સમયમાં આકાશ પાતાળનું અંતર છે. લગભગ સાડાત્રણસો વર્ષનું છે, પ્રિયદર્શી (અશેક) ઈ. પૂ. ર૭૭–૨૩૬ માં થયા છે અને રૂદ્રદામા ઈ. સ. બીજી સદીમાં થયાં છે. એટલે શું પ્રિયદર્શી રાજાના વખતમાં સાડાત્રણસો વર્ષ પછી થનારા રૂદ્રદામાનું નામ, સાલ, સંવત હકીકત અને ઘટનાઓનું વર્ણન કરવામાં આવ્યું હતું ? ” રૂદ્રદામાની જીવનની પળેપળ શું પ્રિયદર્શીના વખતમાં જણાઈ ગઈ હતી ? ખરેખર જે તે પ્રશસ્તિ પ્રિયદર્શી રાજાના વખતમાં લખાઈ હોય તો તેમાં રૂદ્રદામાની હકીકત શા માટે વર્ણવાઈ ગઈ !
† ...But the interest of the inscriptions in our book is confined almost exclusively to the great King Rudradaman. The second inscription gives us more information with regard to this monarch (Rudradāman ) than we have for any of other ruling members of his house. It refers to an event which happened, accord to the inscription" In the 72nd year of the Mahakshatrapa Rudradaman...the Pahlava minister Suvīshākha, son of Kulaipa, undertook the mighty work of restoring the dam ; and the inscription,...tells how this task was by him successfully accomplished...... It is too much to hope that......the opportunity of serving themselves as heirs in this matter also to Chandragupta, Asoka, and Rudradaman, by giving the people back their lake?
