________________ LIFE OF MAHÁVÍRA. At this time the adorable ascetic Mahávíra came to the town of Asthigráma, and spent there the first rest of the rainy season. Proceeding then to Champa and Prishtachampa he there spent three, at Vánijyagráma near Vaisáli he spent twelve, and in the village of Nalinda near Rajagriha fourteen, six at Mithilá, two at Bhadrika, one at Alambhika, one at Srávasti, one at Panitabhúmi, and the last rest of the rainy season he spent at Pápa, where reigned King Shastipála. There having spent the season of rest at the royal court, in the fourth month, in the seventh demilunation, on the night immediately preceding the new moon, was the time of the adorable ascetic hero completed, his earthly career finished, the bands of decay and death loosed, and he entered on a state of perfect bliss, wisdom, liberty, freedom from care and passion, and absence of all pain". This took place in the second year named Chandra, in the month Pritivardhana, in the demilunation Nandivardhana, in the day named Agnivesha, and surnamed Upa 91 * These attributes of the state of Nirván are surely incon sistent with annihilation; मिद्ध बुद्धे मुत्ते अंतगडे परिनिव्वुडे मब्वदुखपहिले the fifthi translated “freedom is the one that from passion;" in Sans. denotes Nirván properly.
