________________ APPENDIX (fire) .. 404 APPENDIX : 8 SCANNING AND REPRODUCTION & OPERATION OF MANUSCRIPTS IN THE JINABHADRA JNANABHANDARA, JAISALMER (*3 August-Dec. 1998 - Sravana 2054-Pausa 2055 sarvat) PROJECT CARRIED OUT UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF Pujyapădăcāryadevasrimadvijaya-SiddhisüriśvarapattalankaraPujyapádacáryadevasrimad-Vijayameghasurisvara sisyaratnaPujyapada Gurudevamuniräjasri Bhuvanavijayantevisi Munirājasri Jambūvijayaji Maharaja BRIEF GUIDE 1. INTRODUCTION All the palm-leaf manuscripts held in the Jnanabhandara were scanned and the images recorded on compact disks. The original palm-leaf manuscripts range in length from 6-38 inches with the text written from left to right across the entire length of the page. Page-numbers however are traditionally written only on the second side. The first side is known as the recto or 'A'side, while the second side is the verso or 'B' side. HOW THE IMAGES WERE MADE The largest scanners available were only able to make images 11 x 17 inches. For manuscripts written on short palm-leaves there was no problem for scanning. The first pages were placed on the scanner, a complete image was made of all the A-sides, and then cach leaf was turned over and all the B-sides scanned together. Then the next few pages were placed on the scanner and the process repeated for the entire manuscripts, i.e. in two scans the A-sides and B-sides could be scanned. The werk was started a little bit only on the August 3, because it was an auspicious day Really it was started from August 15.
