________________ Shri Mahavir Jain Aradhana Kendra www.kobatirth.org Acharya Shri Kailassagarsuri Gyanmandir General Editorial It gives us great pleasure to present to Indologists an edition of the Srngārārņava-candrikā, a hither-to unpublished work on Sanskrit poetics. Vijayavari, a disciple of Munîndra Vijayakirti, composed this work at the request of King Kāmirāja of Bangavādi.(in Karnāțaka) who flourished, it is believed, towards the close of the 13th century. A. D. The work deals with various aspects of poetics. It commemorates the glory of King Kāmirāja by means of the examples with which the author illustrates the different points of poetics. In this respect the work is akin to the Rasagangādhara of Jagạnnātha, Ekāvali of Vidyadhara and Pratāparudra-yaśo-bhūşaņa of Vidyānātha in which all the examples are composed by the authors themselves and contain panegyrics of their patrons. The present edition of the Sủngārârnava-candrikā is based on a single Ms. which fell into the hands of Dr. A. N. Upadhye who entrusted it to Dr. V. M. Kulkarni for authentically editing it. No other Ms. is reported from any other source. Dr. Kulkarni, who is a very keen student of Sanskrit poetics, has spared no pains in presenting the text as faithfully as was possible in the circumstances. He has added a learned and critical Introduction to the text wherein he has discussed various relevant topics, such as the personal history of the For Private and Personal Use Only
