INTRODUCTION
obviously not in its restricted sense of figures of speech but in its wider sense denoting all such factors as word and sense that should find place in poetry, rasa, bhāva, zuņa, vrtti, rīti, sayyā, pāka alınıkāras and dosas 1 which poet should avoid in his composition ), in short, Sınskrit poetics. Samgraha primarily means a collection bit here it signifies a compendium 13 or a brief exposition. Alamkāra-samgraha therefore means : 'A compendium or a brief exposition of Sanskrit poetics 14', and metaphorically, the work dealing with it.
According to some, sarpgraha comprises three parts, nainely, uddeśa. ( simple enumeration ), lakṣaṇa ( definition ) and parikşă ( examination or exposition ). The present work contains all the three.
The title ŠC is made up of three words : 1 Srågāra, 2 arņava and 3 candrikā. The word śrngāra denotes one of the, eight or nine rasas bearing that name; arnava means an ocean; and candrikā moonlight.
