________________ 133 Subhasitas in Guņapāla's Jambucariyam पिसुण (Backbiter) २२ पुरओ जंपइ अन्नं, अन्नं पढ़िए हिययए अन्नं । वेसायणो व पिसुणो, न सव्वहा जाइ सम्भावं ।। (१.१३) 22. A bakebiter speaks one thing in the presence, another behind back and thinks of a third thing in the mind. He, like a prostitute, is never well-intentioned, (1. 13). पुत्तहीणपिया (Sonless father) २६ जस्स किर नत्थि पुत्तो, विज्जाविक्कमधणस्स पुरिसस्स । सो तह कुसुमसमिद्धो, फलरहिओ पाक्वो चेव ।। (५.८) 23. A man who has learning, valour and wealth but has no son, is, indeed, like a tree which, abounding in flowers has no fruits. (5. 8). बाल and विद्ध (Child and Old Man) २४ बालो वि सुइसयन्नो, आएओ होइ बुद्धिमंताण । बिद्धो वि होई हेओ, सत्थत्थविवजिओ पुरिसो।। (१३.५) 24. A child even is respectable for the intelligent if he is well versed in hundreds of scriptures, while an old man, having no knowledge of the meaning of the scriptures, is fit to be left well alone. (16. 5). मच्छर (Malice) २५ न य मच्छरेण गहियस्स, पाणिणो कि पि अत्थिऽवत्तव्यं । साहिज्जते य फुडे, न को वि दोसो इह दिठो ।। (१३.१६) 25. There is nothing that cannot be said to a person who is in the clutches of malice; therfore, there is no fault if such a person is told what is clear. (13. 16). refour (Woman) २६ विसमसहावो मयणो, विसमसहावाओ महिलियाओ य । __गुरुरागधमणाओ, कजाकज्ज न याति ॥ २७ रोविति स्यावति य, अलिथं जपंति, पित्तयावति । कवडेण य खंति विसं, मरंति, नो जति सम्भावं ॥ (११. १८-१९) 26-27. Cupid is crooked by nature and so are women. They do not know what is a deed and what is a misdeed, being blinded in their minds due to intense passion. They weep and also make others weep. They tell lies and also produce eonfidence (in others), They eat poison but of deceit. They die but never cntertiain good thoughts (about others). (11. 18-19).
