These sources are thoroughly discussed by Jinavijaya, Kalyanavijaya and Jacobi, in their works referred to while discussing the question of Haribhadra's date. Without go- . ing into details, I give below the main outlines of his life.
He was a Brahmana by caste and belonged to faqet or Chitor. He seems to have stayed there upto his initiation. He was wellversed in the Brahmanic lores; to quote सुमतिगणिन्'s गणधरसार्धवृत्तिः “ एवं सो पंडित्तगव्वमुव्वहमाणो हरिभद्दो नाम माहणो ।' He was brought to the faith of Jainism by the preachings of a Jaina nun named याकिनी. हरिभद्र often styles himself
fres as a homage to her. She directed him to faiz whom the styles as his preceptor. The legend runs that once upon a time gaz heard याकिनी reciting a गाथा
चकिदुर्ग हरिपणगं पणगं चक्कीण केसवो चक्की । केसव चक्की केसव दुचकी केसी अचक्की य || हरिभद्र could not understand this गाथा and
