________________ Class 3. is that karma by reason of which we have feelings of pains and pleasures. (Quite different from consciousness. In consciousness taken by itself there is neither pain nor pleasure ; feeling is quite a distinct phenomena from consciousness). This karma is called Vedaniya karma. Class 4. is called Mohaniya karma. (Literally, intoxicating karma, that is, mental, or moral intoxication.) Its nature is to infatuate our mental and moral nature, in such a way that we are not able to distinguish between right and wrong. Class 5. Āyuh karma. (Literally, duration of life.) It determines the duration of the life and the general nature of the life. This karma generated in this life, determines what the next incarnation or Tebirth will be like and its duration. (But it does not fix the number of years or months of life ; it is rather quantity of life than length ; and as water can be squeezed out of a sponge quickly or slowly, so if this ayuh is used up quickly, the life in years will be a less number than if it be used up slowly or spun out.) Class 6. Nàma karma. Is that karma by reajon of which we have our objective individuality. The combination of all the factors of individuality which then taken together makes us call a person Mr-or ys-so-and-so. Class 7. Gotra karma. By reason of which the son is born into his particular social surroundings. Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
