________________ RIGHT ATTITUDE Right attitude (Samyak Darshan) is the first and foremost qualification of an aspirant. Whether the aim is mundane or supermundane, the goal material or spiritual, it is important as a requisite of success. Every system of religion has prescribed it as the starting point of the spiritual journey. It consists in the right selection of, first the ideal, secondly that of the preceptor who can show the way theoretically as well as practically and thirdly the way itself. In the solutions of political, social and other problems also it holds an important function. The Vedanta prescribes the following four requisites of an aspirant : 1. Preception of the distinction between what is permanent and what is temporary. In the field of valuation it is a distinction of permanent values. from the temporary ones. 2. Detachment from all the objects of the temporary values, attainable in this world or in the next. 3. A calm temperament, undisturbed by external effects, which consists of :(i) mental equilibrium, (ii) control of the sensual desires, (iii) abstinence from external inducements, (iv) tolerance and fortitude against hardships, (v) concentration and (vi) faith or devotion. 22 Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
