________________ 154 TAINISM AND DEMOCRACY Udayana felt it as his disgrace and orderd his troops for a march. His mighty force invaded the capital of Chanda forced him to surrender. He was taken as a prisoner and the troop marched back. While they were on the way, the holy day of paryushana came. Udayana. was a staunch devotee of Lord Mahāvīra and faithfully observed the vows of a house-holder. He could not think of passing this important festival un-observed. A halt was ordered and tents were pitched. Udayana kept fast throughtout the day and observed Pratikramana in the evening. He recited the hymn of universal brotherhood and announced that 'he forgave all the beings, that all the beings might forgive him, that he had friendship for all and enmity for none.' While he was reciting the above verse Chandaprodyota came to his mind and the incident pinched him in the heart. He thought his declaration fictitious as long as Chanda was his captive. He went to the camp of Chanda, set him free and asked forgiveness with folded hands. Chanda kept mum. He was feeling deeply the injury incurred in the loss of kingdom. Udayana was wise enough to know his heart from the face. He restored Chanda to his throne honourably, gave him the hand of that beautiful mainden and repeated the request for forgiveness. Ultimately, Chanda was satisfied and then only the ceremony was thought to be complete. The festival of paryushana brought their enmity to an end and a new chapter of friendship began. Mysterious Origin The origin of this very important festival is shrouded in mystery.
