________________ FIVE TYPES OF KNOWLEDGE The problem of knowledge, in general is divided into three branches of Psychology, Epistemology and Logic. But the present treatment is confined to the contribution of Jainism towards the first two branches only. Psychology of Knowledge : Jaina psychology can be analysed under the following three heads : 1. Organs of knowledge. 2. Their function for producing cognition. 3. The stages of knowledge, from sensation to judgement. The organs-In discussing the causation of knowledge generally the following four factors come into consideration : 1. The soul. 2. The mind. 3. The senses. 4. The object. The Soul : According to Jainism the soul is a permanent substance. It possesses consciousness as its natural attri. butes.
