INTRODUCTION 1
1. SUTRADHARA MANDANA. HIS TIMES AND WORKS.
Acharya Shri Kailassagarsuri Gyanmandir
The Devatamurtiprakaranam i. e., 'the section on the images of deities' forms a part of the Vastu-sastra (of Sutradhara or Sūtrabhṛit Maṇḍana, the son of Śrikṣetra) and is a work on sculpture. As his title implies, Mandana was an architect-Sutradhara (literally, one who holds, plies or wields the 'plumb'-line).
I.
Both Mandana and his father, Śrikṣetra were under the patronage of Mahārāņa Kumbha, the celebrated king of MewarKumbhakarna Mahendra of Medapata1. A distinguished hero, a man of letters and a noted builder of monuments, Kumbha was an outstanding personality in the history of late Mediæval India (15th C.). Mahārāṇā Kumbha's consort was probably Mirabai, well-known for her renunciation and deeply religious life. Kumbha (Karna Mahendra) wrote a commentary on the Gitagovinda of Jayadeva and it is entitled Rasikapriya (Gitagovindațika). Two other works (on music) are also due to him:
