________________ Forword It gives us immense pleasure to place the critical edition of the first Upanga namely Aupapatika-Sutra with the oldest available Sanskrit commentary by Acarya Abhayadevasuri V.S. 1120 ( = 1063 A.D.). Since Acarya Abhayadevasuri had commented on nine Anga Sutras, he is well known as the Navangitikakara. The critical edition has been prepared by utilizing various palm leaf manuscripts as well as paper manuscripts. Late Agama prabhakara Muni Shri Punyavijayji had initiated the process of preparing the critical editions of Jain scriptures in a series called the 'Jain Agam Granth Mala', which included scriptures such as the Nandi Sutra, the Anuogaddara and many others. Shri Mahavir Jain Vidyalay supported the initiative by publishing them. Late Agama prajna Muni Shri Jambuvijayji continued working on researching and editing the Jain scriptures after the demise of Agama prabhakara Muni Shri Punyavijayji. With the extensive dedication of Late Agama prajna Muni Shri Jambuvijayji, a lot of scriptures were retrieved. after the demise of Agama prajna Muni Shri Jambuvijayji, On the request of the Jinagam Samsada we Acarya Vijay Munichandra Suriji and Acarya Vijay Dharmadhurandhar Suriji embraced the opportunity of working on the same cause. The classification of Jain scriptures in categories like Anga pravista, Aniga bahya etc. along the with information regarding the antiquity of the Upanga texts and other such details have been mentioned by Late Agama prabhakara Muni Shri Punyavijayji in scriptures edited by him and thus have not been stated here. Late Agama prabhakara Muni Shri Punyavijayji had to say the following with respect to the Upargasutras. "The Aupapatika and Jivabhigama Upangasutras have been mentioned in the index of the Utkalika Sastra of the Nandi Sutra. On seeing them and their content it seems that they have been scripted around the same time as that of the Dasavaikalika Sutra when the Aratiya Acaryas undertook the task of presenting the subject matter of the Angasutras section wise and in an organized manner.
