Our Ancestors' Mantras-The Essence of the Spiritual Jean Lightfoot
This presentation will introduce the unique ethnic character of the "Spiritual," (a song-form unquestionably of African origin). Specifically, it will explore the origin and history of the songs; the text and sub-text of the lyrics; the complex rhythmic schemes and constructs of the music; and the universality of themes that have created an art form as imperishable as the "Spiritual." The presentation will combine a musical performance by the presenter, as well as spoken text. This approach will allow for researched documentation of the importance of this music along with musical demonstration of the majesty and variety of the melodic and rhythmic idioms.
Dr. Jean H. Lightfoot is a Senior Associate of Nichols and Associates, Inc. She has assisted with the development of crosscultural curriculum for school systems and provided consultation in diversity for corporations.
