Qkumba Zoo - Dancing All the Way Home
While in many traditions sacred music is contemplative and slow in tempo, other traditions use strong rhythm and up-beat grooves to express sacred celebration. In this performance. Okumba Zoo presents a set of spiritual dance music that helps get what's happening in your heart and soul right into your feet. Wear comfortable shoes! Shake out your bones and refresh yourself for all the other seated sessions you'll be attending at the Parliament.
A Long African Journey
Pops Mohamed
"If you lose your culture, you lose your identity and self-respect as a human being. It also means there is a hole in your soul." Ishmael ("Pops") Mohamed-Jan will mix ancient and modern music and meld the third world with the first. The concert will include performances by the Ngqoko Singers and a group San musicians.
Pops Mohamed is a dedicated and diversely talented emissary of African cultural identity. He uses a variety of traditions musical instruments and disciplines that have brought to his music a unique sense of spirituality.

The pastor and congregation of the beautiful St. Mark's Anglican Church, located just opposite the Multi-Purpose Hall (Registration Headquarters) on the campus of the Cape Technikon, have graciously offered their lovely house of worship as a space for a variety of Parliament programmes. Our Ancestors' Mantras-The Essence of the Spiritual Jean Lightfoot
This presentation will introduce the unique ethnic character of the "Spiritual," (a song-form unquestionably of African origin). Specifically, it will explore the origin and history of the songs; the text and sub-text of the lyrics; the complex rhythmic schemes and constructs of the music; and the universality of themes that have created an art form as imperishable as the "Spiritual." The presentation will combine a musical performance by the presenter, as well as spoken text. This approach will allow for researched documentation of the importance of this music along with musical demonstration of the majesty and variety of the melodic and rhythmic idioms.
Dr. Jean H. Lightfoot is a Senior Associate of Nichols and Associates, Inc. She has assisted with the development of crosscultural curriculum for school systems and provided consultation in diversity for corporations. Dr. Lightfoot is an educator and administrator who presently serves as Dean of Students, Columbia College in Chicago, Illinois.

Songs From the Township
New Life Gospel Choir

The significance of light in Hinduism and Judaism. Program involves invocation and prayer, lighting candles and lamps, songs, hymns, and dances, sweetmeats and festival foods. The service will be conducted by two leaders of Cape Town area Jewish and Hindu congregations. It's an exploration of religious similarities and differences; an interfaith encounter of the best kind.
A Township choir of some 60 youths, performing Gospel songs in Xhosa.

Music of Ngqoko
The Ngqoko Singers
Using an umrube, a bow used for hunting during the day and as a musical instrument at night, and a uhadi, a lullaby instrument used by grandmothers to console their in-laws while the men are away, the group will perform traditional initiators' and diviners' songs.
This group of traditional indigenous musicians has performed in most of the capitals of Europe.
