Karel Thomas August This lecture will describe the Islands of Hope programme, which is a joint initiative of five South African congregations in urban and rural areas where the church is actively engaged in transforming community life. Karel August is a Moravian Minister and a lecturer in Practical Theology at the University of Stellenbosch. His focus is on the area of Church and Society with a special focus on Community Development 10:00 AM-11:30 AM IN ENGINEERING 3.44 Now Let's All Work To End Family Violence Ms. Barbara Baker; Ms. Charlene Smith Ms. Baker intends to show the units of families as well as the 8 types of violence that can occur in these families. Participants of this workshop will view a two part award-winning video, which will be followed by a question and answer session. There will be a period set aside for participants to split up into groups, who will be asked to engage in dialogue concerning topics related to violence, family and religious institutions. Each group will have topics like What Every Church Should Know About Violence', 'Have A Relationship Not A Power Struggle', etc. A graph will be made up to show the various responses groups had during their meetings. Ms. Baker will also be handing out supplementary materials in her workshops Elder Barbara J. Baker, M.Ed., DTM, Moderator of Church & Society committee at Sixth Grace Presbyterian Church, Chicago, IL, USA the main presenter, is also Commissioner to the Chicago Presbytery. She is an educator in the Chicago Public Schools where she has won many awards & grants for her efforts and dedication in teaching urban children. She does public speaking in the Toastmasters International and a favorite pastime is as a writer and a Public Relations Practitioner for the above-listed organizations, IBWC and many other organizations. She studied "Confronting Violence Against Women under Dr. Reverend Marie M Fortune. Charlene Smith, M.Ed, and Competent Toastmaster, has been a public speaker and a workshop leader for a number of years. She is often a partner of Ms. Baker in many speaking and workshop presentations. Ms. Marty Fleetwood; Mike Maeder; Sr. Sister Margaret; Mr. Richard Johnson; Ms. Vivian Frelix-Hart; Prof. Patricia Guthrie; Ms. Syreeta Shepherd; Ms. Gail Priestley: Ms. Beverly Liberman; Alexis Gonzales Many of the people who are immersed in the technical work of developing housing for the poor, feeding and clothing people, and creating community support networks for isolated and dispossessed folks are able to do their work, and keep doi by getting inspired and staying focused, nourished, and endlessly engaged by the spiritual wisdom they have tapped into from a variety of religious traditions. Come discuss with us how deeply personal spiritual values are animated into community service. Converse with a panel of social justice activists, each informed by a different religious tradition, but all doing work focused on sustaining the planet and helping her peoples. Martha Fleetwood is the Founder and Executive Director of HomeBase, a nonprofit, public policy law firm devoted for 13 years to fighting homelessness in the San Francisco Bay Area, the State of California, and the US. She has been a Board member of the St. Anthony Foundation Ms. Fleetwood holds a BA from the University of California at Irvine and a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School and has held significant positions or responsibility with the US Department of Justice and the legal arm of the National NAACP. Mr. Mike Maeder, Napa Valley Shelter Project is responsible for all phases of fundraising for the Napa Valley Shelter Project (NVSP), serving homeless families and single adults in Northern California's wine country He has served as a Benedictine monk and holds a Bachelors and a Masters degree from St. John's University and a PhD from the University of California Sister Margaret, St. Joseph: Discussant Mr. Johnson is the Chair of the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Oakland Public Library Foundation, assuring resources for literacy programs in this California community. He serves on the Board of the National Economic Development Law Center, Boys and Girls Club and HomeBase The Center For Common Concerns. He is the Senior Corporate Counsel to the Clorox Company, world headquartered in Oakland Ms. Frelix Hart is Homelessness Coordinator for the City of San Jose, and she establishes new program facilities and arranges collaborations among agencies to better serve homeless people, including those with mental disabilities and substance disorders. She holds a B. S. from the University of Santa Clara and worked towards a Master's Degree in Education and Personal Administration from the University of Oregon. Prof. Guthrie is the Director of Women's Studies Program and an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Development at California State University. Hayward. She has researched, written and lectured on a number of topics including: African-Americans, the South Carolina Sea Islands, Feminist Studies, Religion/Spirituality and InterGroup Relations. She has received a number of awards and grants including an ACE fellowship and a CSU. Hayward Faculty Development Award. She holds a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Rochester and is active in a number of professional and community service organizations. Ms. Shepherd is the Executive Assistant for BOSSa 28 year old nonprofit corporation dedicated to ending poverty and homelessness in our community. For the past 2 years she has served as Clerk of the African American Economic Justice Program, a committee of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) a faith-based organization. Syreeta received her Bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley Ms. Gail Priestley is the Director of Basic Services and Community Outreach at San Francisco's St. Anthony Foundation, and she oversees the management of free services for poor and homeless individuals: a dining room, medical clinic and clothing and furniture. Ms. Priestley is also active on the Board of the San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium. Ms. Liberman is the co-founder and Executive Director of the One ALA Time Foundation, an organization that trains volunteers to be mentors to homeless and economically disadvantaged individuals. Ms. Liberman is also a former Master of Arts candidate at the American Baptist Seminary of the West. No biographical statement available at time of printing. miesass peophold Critical Issues 10:00 AM-11:30 AM IN THEATER 7 Religious Traditions and Spiritualities Facing Racism and the Legacies of Racism: An Invitation to Conversation Prof. William Bernard Gravely This session will explore how religious traditions and spiritualities have faced and are facing racism and the legacies of racism in the context of human rights. In addition, it will explore how other communities, religious and political, can appropriate aspects of the South African transformation in their efforts to heal suffering caused by racism. Participants who wish to contribute to the conversation may contact Gravely in advance or come to the session with a prepared statement to be distributed and, if time permits, read or summarized in five minutes. Should there be a large number of persons wishing to be in conversation, Gravely will arrange for several smaller groups of persons to be able to share with each other. Professor William Gravely has been on the faculty in Religious Studies at the University of Denver since 1968, and part of a Ph.D. facuity exploring religion and social change since 1995.
