10:00 AM-11:30 AM IN ENGINEERING 1.13 The Catholic Church's Engagement in Public Policy Formulation: the Liaison Office
Fr. Peter John Pearson This programme will examine how the Catholic Church in South Africa is attempting to engage in public policy formulation, respecting the fact that it does so in a pluralistic society, a society in transition and against the backdrop of a growing tendency towards privatised religion. It is an engagement that tries to be true to its struggle tradition while exploring what public theology means in this context. Rabbi David Hoffman recently celebrated his 10th anniversary with the Cape Town Progressive Congregation. He is a delegate to the Vaad Hapoel Hatzioni the co-Chairman of the South African Association of Progressive Rabbis, and the National Chairman of Arzenu Southern Africa He is also a member of the Assembly of the Parliament of the World's Religions. Dr. Thillayel Naidoo was a lecturer in the Department of Science and Religion at the University of Durban-Westville, and has recently retired Ms. Nokuzola Mndende (practitioner of African indigenous religion and scholar at the South Africa University of Cape Town: National Chairperson of the National Council of African Traditional Religion Prof James Cochrane is a faculty member of the University of Cape Town.
10:00 AM-12:00 PM IN ENGINEERING 3.44 The Role of Religion in Anti-corruption Strategies Dr. Stiaan vander Merwe This lecture will explore the role of religion in combating corruption. The presenter will illustrate how religion is often a part of the problem, and challenges participants to make religion a part of the solution. Dr. Stiaan van der Merwe is a member of the Uniting Reformed Church of South Africa and the Chief Executive Officer of Transparency International in South Africa.
10:00 AM–11:00 AM IN THEATER 5 Get Together: Festival of Faiths Ms. Michelle Staggs Doninger; Ms. Christina Lee Brown The lecture will begin with a brief history on the founding of The Cathedral Heritage Foundation and its role as a spiritual center for the community, which set in motion the revitalization of an urban community. The lecture will also touch upon the concept development four year progression and international recognition of its Festival of Faiths. The presenters will discuss the strides that have been made with guiding institution partnerships with media and education. Lastly, there will be some discussion of the Cathedral Heritage Foundation's agenda for the future. Michelle Staggs Doninger has been the Executive Director of Cathedral Heritage Foundation since 1997. Along with Christina Lee Brown, and hundreds of volunteers was responsible for developing and imple menting the restoration and revitalization plans for CHF into one of the most significant cathedral projects in the country, and an internationally acclaimed festival celebrating the diversity and unity of our faiths. Christina Lee Brown is the current president of the Cathedral Heritage Foundation and serves on its Board of Directors. She is a cofounder of CHF and has taken a leadership role since its beginning in 1985.
10:00 AM-12:00 PM IN ENGINEERING 3.56 Religion and Retributive Justice or Restorative Justice Ms. Ela Gandhi; Cedric Mason; Dr. Farid Esack This workshop will explore the concept of "restorative justice and its implications on society. We will explore the viewsof a variety of religions, with particular references to scriptures. Ela Gandhi is a MP representing the African National Congress in South Africa. She is a renowned social worker, political activist, and follower of Gandhian ideals. No biographical statement available at time of printing Dr. Farid Esack is a Commissioner for Gender Equality in the South African government and Senior Researcher at the Institute of Religion, Identity and
University of the Western Cape. He is a Muslim theologian who has studied in Pakistan, the United Kingdom and South Africa.
10:00 AM–12:00 PM IN ENGINEERING 1.19 Women's Reflections on the Declaration of Human Rights and Religion for the 21st Century Ms. Charlotte Mary Waterlow; Rama J. Vernon; Ms. Bianca Jagger; Ms. Pregs Govender Charlotte Waterlow, MBE author, teacher, and lecturer will present her paper on Religion and Human Rights. Eminent women activists from different parts of the world will respond from their personal experience and give us their vision of women's rights for the next century. The emphasis will be on the role of religion and the interfaith movement in the lives of women of poverty, war, and exploitation. Each panelist has been chosen for their outstanding work in this area. Audience participation will be encouraged. Charlotte Waterlow received her MA from Cambridge University, UK She worked in the civil service and Foreign Office, taught history in Secondary School in the UK and USA and published textbooks on the History of Europe, India, and Rich and Poor Countries. She is an active member of the United Nations Association and the World Federalists, has traveled widely and recently published" The Hinge of History. an overview of world history. Rama J. Vernon is Founder of Women of Vision and Action. She is the president of the Center for International Dialogue and cofounder of the Academy for Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies. She has traveled to the Soviet Union 48 times in seven years, organizing over 200 SovietAmerican programs. In 1991, she was invited to organize and design conflict resolution dialogues for areas of regional conflict in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Africa and the Middle East. Bianca Jagger is a member of the Executive Director Leadership Council for Amnesty International USA a member of the Advisory Committee for Human Rights Watch America and the Coalition for International Justice She serves on the Board of Directors for the American Way and is a special advisor for Indigenous Development International at the University of Cambridge, UK Pregs Govender, political activist in students or civic structures and orgs trade union mkt. in 70's, 80's and 90's against apartheid.
